EDMONTON, AB -Oilers prospect Joel Maatta walks away from the 2022 World Junior Hockey Championship with a silver medal following a 3-2 overtime loss to Canada on Saturday night.
Finland came within an inch of the gold medal in the 3-on-3 overtime period until Canadian forward Mason McTavish knocked down a Topi Nielmela attempt at the goal line. Canada quickly counter-attacked with 2021 fifth-overall pick Kent Johnson depositing his own rebound past Finland goaltender Juha Jatkola for the game winner.
Maatta, a seventh-round-pick by the Oilers in this past July's NHL Draft, played 17:04 in the game with a pair of shots on the evening.
The University of Vermont forward finished his WJHC tournament with three goals and an assist in the seven games he suited up for. All of Maatta's goals ended up coming with the man advantage, with a two-goal game against Slovakia during the round robin and a goal in the semifinal against Germany.
Finland picks up their sixth silver medal in the history of the tournament and the first since their second-place performance in Russia in 2001. The victory by Canada was the country's 19th time finishing atop the podium at the World Junior Hockey Championship, and first time since 2020.
