Quinn speaks to media before tonight's rookie game in Calgary

Here are some notes ahead of tonight's rookie meeting in Calgary:

  • Head Coach Colin Chaulk will get the chance to deploy the trio of Isaac Howard, Josh Samanski and Quinn Hutson together after they were one of the AHL's most effective lines during the first half of last season for the Bakersfield Condors.
  • All three earned NHL minutes last season, with Samanski's call-up in late January leading to an extended stay for the German with the Oilers and posting two goals and two assists in 24 games, along with a goal and an assist in five playoff contests. The 24-year-old represented Germany at the Winter Olympics and during the World Championship.
  • Hutson made his NHL debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Jan. 3 before collecting his first goal two nights later against the Boston Bruins, returning to the AHL to lead all rookies in goals (30) and finishing second on the Condors in points (63).
  • Finnish forward Viljami Marjala, who was third in points on the Condors last season with 60 points (17 goals) in 72 games, will centre Rhett Pitlick and first-year professional in German David Lewandowski.
  • A player who doesn't have pro experience but carries veteran status in the Oilers rookies' locker room is Owen Michaels, who'll centre William Nicholl and Camp invite Simon Tassey on the third line. The captain of NCAA champion Western Michigan last year has three seasons of college hockey under his belt and spent time with the Edmonton Oilers last season getting acclimated to the team & pro hockey after signing with the team.
  • The defensive pair of Damien Carfagna and Beau Akey are the senior duo suiting up for the Oilers tonight after spending last season in Bakersfield.
  • Czech blueliner Tomas Cibulka spent four seasons in the QMJHL before travelling back overseas for two years with HC Motor České Budějovice. He signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Oilers in late March.
  • Goaltenders Nathaniel Day, Eemil Vinni and Samuel Jonsson are all expected to each receive a period of game action.
