With the extended Euro and East coast trip all said and done, it was time to finally drop the puck on Rogers Place ice.
Edmonton got the first high-quality scoring chance in the opening minute of the match after McDavid barrelled down on a 2-on-1 and missed the far side with a wrist shot.
It was all Bruins following that sequence as Talbot stood tall throughout the first period at home.
The visitors pushed hard on the gas, pumping shot after shot on Talbot, who was forced to make a number of key stops. With Adam Larsson in the box for slashing, the keeper made back-to-back saves on David Pastrnak's wrister and a Patrice Bergeron one-timer.
"He was huge for us tonight," said Nugent-Hopkins of Talbot. "Our start wasn't good enough but he held us in it and gave us a chance to win."
Then late in the period, Talbot got some help from defenceman Darnell Nurse during a scrambled play. The netminder couldn't cover up the puck following a one-timer, allowing Brad Marchand an opportunity to stuff in the rebound. The puck was airborne on its way to the goal-line but Nurse swatted it out of danger to preserve the tie game.
"Talbs was essential in the first period," said Oilers Head Coach Todd McLellan. "We were flat, we were frozen. Once we got going and once we got skating and supporting puck movement, we were a lot better.
"Without Cam's performance in the first period, we don't get a chance to come back."
The Oilers were hampered with injuries in the second, in a period that saw both teams trade goals.
Matt Benning was unable to return to the game halfway through the first, while Ty Rattie was injured just minutes into the second. McLellan was forced to mix and match his lines, giving players elevated roles as a result.
"The back end was taxed very early, obviously with Matt Benning leaving and not coming back," said McLellan of his five defenders. "They gave us some pretty brave minutes, the five of them."
The goal scoring started with centre David Krejci, who received a pass and zipped one glove side.

POST-GAME RAW | Kailer Yamamoto 10.18.18

The lead would be short-lived, however, due to Yamamoto.
The 2017 first-round selection notched a beautiful first career goal at 13:24 of the frame. Yamamoto received a pass from Larsson at the blueline then turned and drove to the net with a leg up on three back-checking Bruins, eventually flipping the puck far side on Halak.
Yamamoto celebrated with an open mouth and wide eyes, unafraid of displaying the jubilation from career strike No. 1.
"When I scored, I didn't know what to do," he said, donning the Oilers player of the game vest. "I was like, 'Wow, that just went in. Oh my.'
"It was one of the best feelings I've ever had."
McLellan commented on his trust with No. 56, who got 33 seconds of man-advantage time and 56 seconds on the penalty kill.
"Any time you use a young player like that on the penalty kill, that tells you how much you trust them and what his anticipation skills are like. He's very aware of what's going on around him with or without the puck."
About Yamamoto's first goal, McLellan said: "It's time. I sensed a bit of relief in him and hopefully, now the rest will come quicker."

Draisaitl scores OT winner to lift Oilers past Bruins

The two sides swapped leads once again in the final frame.
Nugent-Hopkins cashed one in for the Orange & Blue on the power play, depositing McDavid's shot off the end boards for his second of the season.
Boston's top line responded as Brad Marchand found Pastrnak in the high slot. He ripped one shelf on Talbot at 11:26 to tie it at 2-2.
McLellan felt his club limited the Bruins' big line.
"Once Rattie got hurt, Leon went up there (to the first line) and we just went big boys against big boys. I thought they did a good job," he said.
Neither club could score the go-ahead goal in regulation. That forced overtime, where just seconds into the extra period, McDavid picked off a stretch pass then entered the offensive zone and put the puck on Draisaitl's tape for his fifth career overtime winner.
"We know what we like to do in overtime," said Draisaitl of the strategy when he and McDavid take the ice 3-on-3. "It's a matter of getting ready for the puck and getting it off quick."
The Oilers will host the Nashville Predators on Saturday. Puck drop is at 8:08 PM MDT.
