The Hurricanes (25-21-9), who are one point behind the New York Islanders for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference, ended a three-game losing streak. Scott Darling made 21 saves for his first win since Jan. 11, a span of five starts.
"He was really good," Carolina coach Bill Peters said. "We got a little loose there for a little bit and he made some big saves and handled the puck real well."
The Canucks (21-28-6), who lost their fourth straight, played without forwards Brock Boeser (hand) and Markus Granlund (ankle), and defensemen Chris Tanev (leg). Each was injured in Vancouver's 5-2 loss at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. The Canucks played with 11 forwards and seven defensemen.
"We weren't good enough to win this hockey game tonight, not even close," Vancouver coach Travis Green said. "Our execution with the puck was nowhere near close enough to beat a team that skates like that. We're not a good enough hockey team to have half a team play well."

Carolina made it 1-0 on the first shift of the game. Jordan Staal fed Pesce, who scored on a wrist shot from between the face-off circles at 14 seconds of the first period. It was his second goal of the season.
"You can't ask for a better start than that, less than 20 seconds in, getting going, because we had lost three in a row," Justin Williams said. "We needed to get some traction somewhere."
Phillip Di Giuseppe made it 2-0 with his first of the season at 14:43 when he chipped the puck off the leg of Vancouver goaltender Jacob Markstrom (29 saves) at the left post.
Aho made it 3-0 with 56 seconds remaining in the period. He took a stretch pass from Jaccob Slavin and beat Markstrom between the legs with a backhand for his 20th goal. Aho has 13 goals in his past 17 games.
"I think it's a little bit of desperation for sure," Pesce said. "We've had some trouble scoring these past few games. We know we need to score, we know where the standings are at. We need to find a way, no matter how we're doing it."
Michael Del Zotto made it 3-1 at 3:30 of the second period. His shot from the left point changed directions twice, hitting Joakim Nordstrom and Justin Faulk.
Carolina extended the lead to 4-1 on Williams' goal at 7:27 of the third. Jeff Skinner created a turnover in the neutral zone and set up Williams, who shot high to the stick side.
"Jeff does what he does," Williams said. "He creates turnovers and I just called for the puck and shot it. I've been trying to focus on shooting the puck a lot more and help the team by scoring some goals."

They said it

"For me, I've got to look myself in the mirror. I've got to come up with some timely saves. Today I didn't. You've got to start with the goaltending. The past couple games, I haven't been good enough. I'm not good enough, and we've got a lot of guys on our team who are aren't playing good enough to be in this league. It's embarrassing." -- Canucks goalie Jacob Markstrom
"The thing about the NHL is there's always another game and it's usually pretty soon. The game means nothing tonight if you don't win tomorrow. You've got to follow up and string some wins together." -- Hurricanes forward Justin Williams
