Coyotes keep Sidney Crosby at 998, win in overtime

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Defenseman Connor Murphy scored his first goal in 51 games with 21.8 seconds left in overtime to give the Arizona Coyotes a 4-3 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Gila River Arena on Saturday.
Murphy carried the puck into the Penguins zone and beat goalie Marc-Andre Fleury with a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle for his first overtime goal in the NHL.
"It's exciting," said Murphy, who had not scored since April 5. "Obviously, that's probably not the best goal given up for them, from that wide of an angle, but I am pretty happy with it. I'm not the biggest goal-scorer, and it's been a long time, but my first [overtime goal] is a pretty memorable one."

Penguins center Sidney Crosby did not have a point for a second consecutive game and remains two shy of 1,000 for his NHL career.

Martin Hanzal, who scored two goals for Arizona (18-28-7), played a major role in keeping Crosby off the score sheet.
"[Hanzal] was a monster for us tonight," said Coyotes goalie Mike Smith, who made 28 saves. "Right from the drop of the puck, he was engaged in the game and he led by example. That's what we need from him."
Pittsburgh (34-13-7) trailed 3-1 with less than six minutes left.
Rookie Josh Archibald, who scored his first two NHL goals, got the rally started. After Smith left his crease and mishandled the puck, Archibald stuffed it into the open net at 14:38 to pull the Penguins within 3-2.
"We were told before the game to pressure him … sometimes he'll cough up the puck," said Archibald, who had 11 goals with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League before being called up Friday for his second NHL game. "I guess I put a little too much pressure on him, and he kind of gave it right to me."

"That play changed the complexion of the game," Arizona coach Dave Tippett said. "We had the lead and things were going pretty smooth … but that gave them life, and then we were hanging on for dear life."
With Fleury pulled for the extra attacker, Phil Kessel beat Smith off a rebound to tie it 3-3.
"Anytime you come back from a two-goal deficit and get a point, you have to give our players credit for the fight and the resilience," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. "Having said that, our expectation is to win games and we didn't win."
Archibald got to the rebound of an Eric Fehr shot and lifted a backhand past Smith just under the crossbar to put the Penguins up 1-0 at 5:41 of the second period.
Rieder scored his fourth goal in six career games against the Penguins at 6:40 to tie it 1-1, and the Coyotes took a 2-1 lead when Hanzal shoved the puck under Fleury's pad on the rebound of a Radim Vrbata shot at 9:00 of the second.
Hanzal scored on the rebound of an Oliver Ekman-Larsson shot at 3:36 of the third to make it 3-1.

Hanzal dove across the crease to get to a rebound and squeeze the puck under Fleury's arm to give the Coyotes a two-goal lead.

Smith got his glove on Carter Rowney's shot from in tight with 12:51 left to keep Arizona up by two goals.

Unsung performance of the game

After struggling in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, Ekman-Larsson and defense partner Luke Schenn shut down the Crosby line most of the night. Ekman-Larsson had two assists, a shot on goal and two blocked shots in 28:35.

Highlight of the game

The Penguins forced overtime when Kessel tracked a Kris Letang shot that hit Patric Hornqvist's skate and then the post before beating Smith on the rebound.

On Feb. 11, the lucky number was 11. On Larry Fitzgerald Bobblehead Night (he wears No. 11 for the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL), Hanzal (No. 11 for the Coyotes), scored his 11th goal of the season with exactly 11 minutes left in the second period. … It was the first time since Feb. 24 and 27, 2016, that Crosby has been held without a point in back-to-back games.
