Rowney has gone from an undrafted free agent to a Stanley Cup winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2017.
The native of Sexsmith, Alberta, wasn't selected in the NHL Draft, but after four seasons at the University of North Dakota, he joined the Penguins organization in 2013-14, playing most of the season with Wheeling of the ECHL, where he had 44 points (13 goals, 31 assists) in 39 games. After a fast start with Wheeling in 2014-15, he was promoted to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, where he played the next two seasons.

Rowney was among the last cuts by the Penguins at training camp in 2016 and returned to the AHL but was called up when injuries hit in midseason and made his NHL debut against the Nashville Predators on Jan. 31, 2017. He didn't put up big offensive numbers, finishing with seven points (three goals, four assists) in 27 games, but he provided size and energy and emerged as a useful checker and penalty-killer for the Penguins, who spent much of the season battling injuries to key players.
All three of Rowney's points during his 20 Stanley Cup Playoff appearances came in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Ottawa Senators, when he had three assists in a 7-0 victory.
Rowney signed a three-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks on July 2, 2018.
