Jacob Fowler MTL status report October 8 2026

Welcome to the NHL Status Report. Here is the latest lineup/injury news around the NHL.

Montreal Canadiens

Goalie Sam Montembeault sustained an undisclosed injury at practice Wednesday and will see a doctor Thursday to determine the length of his absence. "You never want to see anybody go down with an injury, and especially a guy like that, that's worked to get his game back and looked pretty good. So hopefully it's not too long and we can get him back up here," Canadiens forward Cole Caufield said.  Jacob Fowler will make his first start of the season against the Nashville Predators on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; RDS, TSN2, SCRIPPS). The 21-year-old goalie was recalled from Laval of the American Hockey League on Wednesday. He was 9-6-2 with a 2.43 goals-against average and .908 save percentage in 17 games with Montreal last season.

Carolina Hurricanes

Seth Jarvis practiced Thursday in a regular jersey for the first time since having offseason shoulder surgery. The forward will not play against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; HHN, CARNHL, SNP) but appears to be ahead of schedule for his return. Jarvis was originally expected to return to the lineup between late October and December. He led the Hurricanes with 32 goals last season, and had 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 19 playoff games to help them win the Stanley Cup.

Ottawa Senators

Linus Ullmark will start for the Senators in their home opener against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; RDSI, TSN5, NBCSP), but defenseman Jake Sanderson will miss his third straight game. Ullmark, who left after the second period of Ottawa's 4-1 win at the Boston Bruins on Monday following a collision with Boston forward JJ Peterka, did not dress Tuesday at the Detroit Red Wings, but was in the starter's net on Thursday. "Looks great. Good, he looks good," Senators coach Travis Green said. Sanderson did not practice on Thursday. He left a 3-2 win at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday with an undisclosed injury. He missed part of training camp because of an undisclosed injury.

Minnesota Wild

Nick Foligno will not play at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; Wild+, MINNHL, The Spot) and will miss at least the next two games for the Wild because of an upper-body injury, coach Jon Hynes said. The forward left a 3-2 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday late in the first period and did not return. He will also miss their game at the Florida Panthers on Saturday.

New York Islanders

Mathew Barzal skated on his own Thursday for the first time since prior to training camp. The forward missed camp due to aggravating a prior injury and has not played in New York's three games this season. He led New York with 72 points (19 goals, 53 assists) in 81 games last season.
