New York Rangers

J.T. Miller and Artemi Panarin practiced Monday and will play for New York in its season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN1, TVAS). Miller, a forward and the new Rangers captain, sustained a lower-body injury during practice on Sept. 29 and was day to day. Panarin, a forward, had been dealing with an upper-body injury. ... Conor Sheary signed a one-year contract Monday after attending training camp on a professional tryout agreement.

Colorado Avalanche

Mackenzie Blackwood will not travel with the Avalanche for their season opener at the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday (10:30 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN1, TVAS). The goalie is dealing with an offseason injury and is week to week. ... Samuel Girard will be in the lineup Tuesday; the defenseman was dealing with an injury sustained during the offseason but is healthy enough to play.

Buffalo Sabres

Owen Power (undisclosed) did not practice Monday but has not been ruled out of the Sabres season opener against the Rangers on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; MSG-B, MSG). Power, a defenseman and the No. 1 pick at the 2021 NHL Draft, “strained something” during practice on Sept. 29. ... Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (lower body) also did not practice Monday and has been ruled out for Thursday. Buffalo's No. 1 goalie did not come out for the second period of a 5-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Oct. 1, but Ruff said the injury was not the same as the lower-body injury Luukkonen dealt with earlier in training camp. … Zach Benson (undisclosed) was back on the ice Monday and is expected to play Thursday; the forward had not practiced since Sept. 30. … Mattias Samuelsson (upper body) practiced in a noncontact jersey Monday. The defenseman has been week to week since reaggravating an injury on Sept. 26, but Ruff said he's "definitely a possibility" to play Thursday.

Washington Capitals

Matt Roy (upper body) and Dylan McIlrath (lower body) did not practice with the Capitals on Monday and are still being evaluated after the defensemen were injured during their preseason finale, a 2-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday. Washington coach Spencer Carbery said it’s still to be determined whether they’ll begin the season on injured reserve. “Both didn’t skate today,” Carbery said. “We’re still, I would call it, in the evaluation period of seeing where they’re at. But [they] did not skate today, so we’ll know more probably in the next day.” The Capitals opener at home Wednesday against the Boston Bruins (7:30 p.m. ET; HBO MAX, TNT).

Carolina Hurricanes

Jesperi Kotkaniemi was back in a regular jersey and skated as the Hurricanes’ 13th forward at practice Monday. He left a 6-5 preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sept. 26 after taking a stick to the face from Lightning forward Zemgus Girgensons with 4:24 remaining in the third period. Carolina opens its regular season Thursday against the New Jersey Devils (7:30 p.m. ET; HULU, ESPN+).

Philadelphia Flyers

Cam York was placed on injured reserve on Monday because of a lower-body injury. Flyers general manager Daniel Brière said earlier in the day that they had been trying to gauge the severity of the injury. "At the moment it's a day-to-day thing," Briere said. "We're trying to find out a little bit more. Are we looking at a week? Are we looking at two weeks? Are we looking at two days? That's what we're trying to figure out right now."

Ottawa Senators

Drake Batherson was placed on injured reserve Monday and will be unavailable when the Senators play their season opener at Tampa Bay on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; The Spot, TSN5, RDSI). The forward sustained an upper-body injury during the first week of training camp. ... Tyler Kleven was also placed on IR; the defenseman didn't play in a preseason game after Sept. 21.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Ivan Fedotov was loaned to Cleveland of the American Hockey League on Monday. The 28-year-old goalie was acquired by the Blue Jackets in a trade with the Flyers on Sept. 14. Fedotov had a 1.50 goals-against average and .950 save percentage in two preseason games for Columbus. He is entering the last of a two-year, $6.5 million contract ($3.25 million average annual value) he signed with Philadelphia on April 23, 2024, and can become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Winnipeg Jets

Jonathan Toews practiced with the Jets on Sunday for the first time since the forward sustained an undisclosed injury during a 3-2 preseason loss to the Minnesota Wild on Sept. 30. Toews “tweaked something,” according to coach Scott Arniel, and was day to day. … Cole Perfetti did not practice. Arniel said the forward is week to week because of an ankle injury sustained in the second period of a 5-4 preseason shootout win against the Calgary Flames on Friday.

Edmonton Oilers

Mattias Janmark (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Monday. Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said Sunday the forward is expected to miss 1-2 weeks. ... Defenseman Jake Walman (undisclosed) is questionable for Edmonton's season opener against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday (10 p.m. ET; TVAS, SN) after he had "a little bit of a setback," according to Knoblauch.

St. Louis Blues

Oskar Sundqvist was injured during practice Sunday and needed help leaving the ice. Blues coach Jim Montgomery did not have an update on the forward, who had 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in 67 games for St. Louis last season. The Blues play their season opener at home Thursday against the Minnesota Wild.
