Devils penalty kill holds off Red Wings

DETROIT-- The New Jersey Devils scored two shorthanded goals and defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday.
The Devils killed a 5-on-3 power play in the second period without allowing a shot, then did so again when the Red Wings had a 6-on-4 advantage in the last two minutes of the third.
"Obviously, our penalty killers (1-for-5) were the difference in the game," Devils coach John Hynes said. "The two goals were great, but killing that 5-on-3 in the second period was probably the turning point of the game. Then we stopped them at the end to protect the lead."

New Jersey (21-21-9) extended its road winning streak to five games. Kyle Palmieri scored twice, Stefan Noesen and Adam Henrique scored, and Cory Schneider made 27 saves.
"We know we have to start stringing together some wins," Palmieri said. "Special teams are always important in this league, so hopefully tonight means we are going to start getting a better performance in that part of the game."

Detroit (20-21-9) has lost five straight (0-2-3) and fell into last place in the Eastern Conference. Jared Coreau made 20 saves in each team's first game after the All-Star break.
"We weren't good enough," Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "We had to come out a little more ready, and that's on me."
The Devils produced three scoring chances before Noesen beat Coreau for his fourth goal of the season 1:28 into the first period. Palmieri made it 2-0 with his 12th at 6:21, picking up a loose puck and putting it past Coreau for a shorthanded goal.
"We stressed needing a good start, so going up 2-0 was big," Palmieri said.
The Red Wings had a two-man advantage for 1:16 midway through the second period and were booed by their fans after failing to create a chance.

"When you get a 5-on-3 for more than a minute, you've got to score," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "They were better on specialty teams tonight and that was the difference in the game."
Zetterberg scored with 1:57 left in the second, backhanding Gustav Nyquist's pass over Schneider to make it 2-1. Palmieri made it 3-1 with 34 seconds to go, taking a wrist shot past Coreau.
"We've given away too many leads this year, so Kyle's goal right after they scored was huge," Schneider said.
Henrique, playing his 400th NHL game, gave the Devils a 4-1 lead at 10:30 of the third with their second shorthanded goal. Tomas Tatar scored for the Red Wings before the power play ended, making it 4-2 at 11:49.
Red Wings defenseman Nick Jensen scored his first NHL goal at 15:18, deflecting a shot off Schneider from behind the goal line to make it 4-3.
Palmieri took an interference penalty with 2:16 to play, but Detroit didn't get a shot despite pulling Coreau.

Goal of the game

With the Devils leading 3-1 in the third period and killing a penalty, Henrique blocked Frans Nielsen's pass, knocked the puck away from Nielsen, grabbed it out of the air to drop it on his stick, then broke in alone to beat Coreau.

Trailing 4-3, the Red Wings had two shots with 10 seconds to play, but Schneider made a pad save on Riley Sheahan before getting in front of Thomas Vanek's rebound.
"In a situation like that, you are just trying to take away the ice and hope no one can elevate the puck," Schneider said.

Highlight of the game

Jensen, playing his 17th NHL game, made a veteran play to get his first goal. Pinching below the goal line, he backhanded the puck into the net off Schneider's right skate.
"I know when you throw it to the net there's going to be chaos," Jensen, 26, said. "I tried to look like I was going behind the net and just tossed it out front."

Unsung moment of the game

After Schneider's late saves on Sheahan and Vanek, New Jersey defenseman Ben Lovejoy knocked the puck behind the net, allowing the Devils to run off the final seconds.

The Devils hadn't scored two shorthanded goals in the same game since Dec. 8, 2011, when Zach Parise and Dainius Zubrus did it in a 5-4 win against the Ottawa Senators. … The Red Wings have the worst power play in the NHL (11.4 percent).
