Devils defeat Hurricanes in shootout

NEWARK, N.J.-- PA Parenteau and Taylor Hall scored in a shootout and goaltender Cory Schneider made 31 saves to help the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Prudential Center on Tuesday.
Schneider stopped Jeff Skinner and Jaccob Slavin in the shootout. Parenteau scored in the first round and Hall clinched the victory in the third round.
"Skinner may have over-handled a little bit and lost control," Schneider said. "Slavin had a couple recently where he's made a deke and elevated it, so I was looking for that but wasn't trying to cheat at all. He tried a quick shot and I tried to stay sharp."

Parenteau and Nick Lappin scored goals in regulation for the Devils (6-3-3). Jordan Staal and Klas Dahlbeck scored and Cam Ward made 39 saves for the Hurricanes (3-5-4). Carolina has lost four of the past five (1-2-2), including two straight to the Devils.
"They threw a lot on the net; that's part of their game," Staal said. "When you put it on net it makes it difficult to find the puck and creates a little bit of havoc."

Lappin scored his first NHL goal 3:51 into the third period off a rebound to tie it 2-2. Sergey Kalinin took the initial shot at the right post before Lappin backhanded an attempt underneath Ward.
"I think no matter what line you're on you want to play in the offensive zone," Lappin said of playing on the fourth line with Kalinin and Vernon Fiddler. "Every time we're out there, we're trying to create offensive and provide energy."
Staal and Dahlbeck scored in the second period to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead.
Staal scored a power-play goal off a feed from Slavin 4:23 into the second to make it 1-1. Dahlbeck, inserted into the lineup for the first time in four games, gave Carolina its first lead when he scored off a wrist shot from the top of the left circle at 17:31.
Parenteau gave the Devils a 1-0 lead when he scored his fifth of the season with 3:10 left in the first. Parenteau, a two-time 20-goal scorer claimed off waivers from the New York Islanders on Oct. 11, is tied with Hall for the Devils lead in goals.

Goal of the game

Lappin scored his first NHL goal to tie the game 2-2. Kalinin made a strong move at the right post and the rebound came to Lappin for a backhand shot. The goal was upheld after Hurricanes coach Bill Peters challenged the play, claiming goalie interference.
"I got a little nervous when they started reviewing it," Lappin said. "I wasn't sure what would happen but thankfully they called it a good goal, so I celebrated twice."

Save of the game

Schneider split to make a glove save against Sebastian Aho off a big slap shot from the top of the left circle with 1:48 remaining in the third to keep the game tied 2-2.
"I saw the trailer coming in there for the one timer so I knew he was going to make that play and step into one so I tried to gain as much ground as I could," Schneider said. "I think it almost hit my glove and got caught in it, and almost pulled my arm back, it was coming so heavy."

Highlight of the game

Hall skated down the right wing, spun away from Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesci in the right circle and fed Parenteau in the slot, but the quick backhand attempt was denied by Ward 11:25 into the third.

Unsung moment of the game

Pesce forced Hall to shoot high and wide off a good opportunity with 37 seconds left in the second and Carolina holding a 2-1 lead. After receiving a pass from Travis Zajac, Hall skated into the high slot but Pesce gained position and extended his stick to block the shot that sailed over the net.

Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk is week to week with an upper-body injury. … Hall got his 200th NHL assist on Parenteau's goal in the first period. The Devils fourth line of Kalinin-Fiddler-Lappin combined for five shots and three points (one goal, two assists).
