Saad scores late, Blue Jackets defeat Bruins

BOSTON -- Boone Jenner had two goals and the Columbus Blue Jackets scored three times in the second period during a 6-4 victory against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Monday.
Brandon Saad, William Karlsson, Scott Hartnell and Dalton Prout also scored for the Blue Jackets (24-29-7), who improved to 5-1-1 in their past seven road games.
The Blue Jackets outshot Boston 35-30 and also hit the post four times. They were 2-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

"We talked about that, we needed to start winning some special teams battles in the games," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. "I thought we did a good job of killing penalties tonight and just kept it simple. And also 5-on-5, I thought we played a really good game, managed the puck, made some good plays, made some good decisions in the neutral zone. And I thought everybody contributed."

Goaltender Joonas Korpisalo, making his 12th straight start, made 26 saves one game after he was pulled late in a 4-0 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. Korpisalo allowed four goals, including one from 149 feet, on 31 shots against the Sabres.
"I felt good," Korpisalo said. "I felt good in that last game, too, but at least no goals from the other end [laughs]. I don't know, three tips today. I don't know if the last one hit someone but it was kind of a hard game. I had a lot of shots and they just tried to get pucks to the net and redirect it, but four goals today and we won so probably better, but we got the win today so I'm happy for that."
Matt Beleskey and Loui Eriksson each scored twice, and Joe Morrow and David Pastrnak each had two assists for the Bruins (32-22-7). Coming off a 4-2-0 road trip, the Bruins lost their second straight at home and dropped to 2-3-1 in their past six at TD Garden. Boston is 20-7-3 on the road but 12-15-3 at home.
Boston goaltender Jonas Gustavsson made 29 saves.

"Well you know if you look at the game I think defensively we failed tonight to do a good job there," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "When you give up five goals - not counting the empty-netter - two of them 4-on-3s, I thought we weren't really good in our own end tonight, losing some battles and that kind of stuff. Defensively we need to be better and we scored enough to win, but we didn't do a good job there."
The Blue Jackets grabbed a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Jenner. Cam Atkinson hammered a one-timer from the top of the right circle and it deflected off Jenner's right foot past Gustavsson.
It took the Bruins 15 seconds to tie the score 1-1. Defenseman Torey Krug's one-timer from the blue line went off Eriksson's foot and past Korpisalo at 11:07. Tortorella challenged the goal based on potential goaltender interference against Eriksson, but the call on the ice stood.
Jenner put the Blue Jackets back in front 2-1 with a shot from the high slot 21 seconds into the second period. The Bruins tied it 2-2 when Matt Beleskey tipped Joe Morrow's shot past Korpisalo at 2:57.

Karlsson gave the Blue Jackets a 3-2 lead. Morrow cleared the puck out of the slot in front of the Boston net and it went off the side wall to Karlsson for a one-timer from the left dot that went past Gustavsson at 10:17.
Columbus took a 4-2 lead on a power-play goal by Hartnell, who tipped a Ryan Murray shot into the back of the net at 17:21 of the second period.
Beleskey's second goal of the game trimmed the Columbus lead 2:52 into the third period. Miller kept the puck in along the right wall and fired a shot off Beleskey's stick to make it 4-3.
Saad put the Blue Jackets up by two at 5-3 with a wrist shot from a tough angle at 14:29. Julien challenged the play because Dennis Seidenberg's stick got deflected at Gustavsson, but the goal was upheld upon review.

With Gustavsson pulled for an extra attacker, Eriksson scored his second goal at 17:03 with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle through a Beleskey screen to make it 5-4.
Prout scored into an empty net with 2:15 remaining for a 6-4 Columbus lead.
"Yeah, it's always a big win coming in here," Columbus forward Matt Calvert said. "You know they are an established team at home and it's a big win, especially scoring six in their barn. I thought we came all night and I thought all four lines were going, and I think that's the most important part for us towards coming in here."
The Bruins host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday. The Blue Jackets visit the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.
