The signing came after Korpisalo won the Jorma Valtonen Award as the best goalie in Finnish junior hockey following the 2011-12 season and was ranked third among European goaltenders by NHL Central Scouting ahead of the 2012 Draft.
He made his NHL debut against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 14, 2015 and finished the season 16-11-4 with a 2.60 goals-against average and .920 save percentage.
Serving as the backup to Sergei Bobrovsky, Korpisalo played 14 games for the Blue Jackets in 2016-17 and went 7-5-1 with a 2.88 GAA and .905 save percentage.
Korpisalo was selected to the Metropolitan Division team for the 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Game but was unable to play because of a knee injury sustained Dec. 29 that forced to miss 25 games.
When Bobrovsky signed with the Florida Panthers as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2019, Korpisalo became the Blue Jackets' No. 1 goalie. He was 19-12-5 with a 2.60 GAA and .911 save percentage in 37 games (35 starts) when the 2019-20 NHL season paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. He entered the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs as the Blue Jackets' starting goalie, shutting out the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-0 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers. Korpisalo then set a modern NHL single-game record with 85 saves despite a 3-2, five-overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round.
Korpisalo signed a one-year contract with the Blue Jackets on May 20, 2022. He was traded to the Los Angeles Kings with defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov on March 1, 2023 for goalie Jonathan Quick, a conditional first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and a third-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft.
