Mikael Backlund scored two third-period goals in a see-saw battle with the visiting Maple Leafs Monday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, but the Flames fell 5-3 to their North Division rivals.
It was their second loss in as many nights to Toronto after being clipped 4-2 Sunday.

Andrew Mangiapane also tallied for the Flames, collecting his 12th goal of the campaign.
Jacob Markstrom, playing his 300th game, made 25 stops in the loss while Jack Campbell turned aside 26 Calgary shots.
The win improved the Leafs to a division-leading 26-10-3, while the Flames are now 16-21-3.
The Flames pushed hard in the final frame but the Leafs scored three goals - and the final two - to break a tie en route to the win.
Rasmus Andersson got things going early for the homeside, unloading his cannon of a shot from the point, Campbell making the stop and then Joakim Nordstrom - who scored his first as a Flame Sunday - getting the rebound but unable to put it over Campbell's outstretched pad.
Sam Bennett came close to open the scoring - as in half-a-puck-width close - when his shot squeaked between Campbell's legs, but Leafs blueliner Travis Dermott reached behind his 'tender and dug the puck off the line, leading to a mad scramble with Campbell eventually laying on the biscuit to bring a whistle.
The Flames outshot the Leafs 10-6 in the first, had a 7-3 advantage in scoring chances and a 3-1 edge in high-danger scoring chances.
Jason Spezza opened the scoring in the game 2:10 into the second period, banging home a loose puck past Markstrom to put the visitors up 1-0.
The Flames had a few chances before Auston Matthews doubled the Toronto lead at 7:53, taking a pass from William Nylander off the rush and circling into the middle, shooting around Calgary d-man Michael Stone and putting the puck high blocker side.
It was his league-leading 26th marker of the season.
Milan Lucic dumped former Flame TJ Brodie deep in the Leafs zone to create a turnover and set the stage for Calgary's first tally.
Mangiapane gathered the puck and passed it up to Elias Lindholm at the point, who fed it down to Noah Hanifin who had pinched in along the boards. His shot attempt went off Brodie's stick as he battled in front with Lucic, going right to Mangiapane who had circled into the slot, his quick wrister beating Campbell five-hole at 18:06.

Backlund tied it up 4:17 into the third period, winning a faceoff at the left dot in the Leafs zone, then battling for possession along with linemate Sam Bennett, before turning and snapping the puck shortside past Campbell.

Wayne Simmonds put Toronto back in front just under three minutes later, knocked to the ice in front of the Flames net by Andersson and Mark Giordano, but still tipping Pierre Engvall's shot home from his knees.
Backlund knotted it back up at 10:05 while short-handed, skating the puck up and finishing a give-and-go with Lindholm - who had to stretch to get the pass and put it back across - to tap the puck into an open net.

Matthews would get his 27th just 45 seconds later on the powerplay, though, to restore the Toronto lead.
John Tavares added one more to round out the scoring.

THEY SAID IT:

Backlund on result:
"Frustration. It's tough. We battled, we find a way to tie the game and then they come back and beat us by two anyway. It's really hard. It's frustrating. It's happened not just tonight, but it's happened a lot to us lately and we've got to find a way to turn it around."

"Frustration. It's tough"

Mangiapane on going forward:
"Just takes everyone to kind of get out of this mess. It's not going to be on one guy. It's going to take all five when we're in tight hockey games like that. It's going to take everyone to pull through. I don't know how their goals went in, but it's always missed coverage or just a little breakdown in our D zone, and it's in the back of the net. It's got to be all five and it's going to take us all to get us out."

"Just takes everyone to kind of get out of this mess"

Head Coach Darryl Sutter on team's compete:
"I think tonight is a game where I give our players credit for their character to come back."

"Our work ethic, believe me, is not the issue"
