1. TALE OF THE TAPE

The Flames are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday, despite throwing more than 40 shots at the opposition net for the second consecutive game.
Blake Coleman and Elias Lindholm supplied the offence and Jacob Markstrom made 24 saves for the homeside, but 2016 Jennings Trophy winner John Gibson proved to be the difference with 41 stops of his own.
Jamie Drysdale scored the OT winner for the visitors, dropping the Flames' record to 0-1-1.
Tonight, they look to rebound in the first of a five-game road trip.
('Rebound' being the operative word.)

"Still, that emphasis has to be on around the goalie more, and the second and third (chances). There are very few goals that are highlight goals, when you look at it. Most of them are a screen, or a flash play, or a tip, or a rebound, or something like that.

The Flames have outshot their opponents 90-60 through the first two games of the season.
The Red Wings, meanwhile, have five of a possible six points to open the season - thanks, in large part, to the play of Tyler Bertuzzi.
The 26-year-old scored four goals in their season-opening win over the reigning Cup champs, and has since added another (along with an assist) to his gaudy goal column.
But Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets was a total team effort, and the Wings are riding high entering the finale of a four-game homestand.
"Each night, we've worked and competed," Wings Head Coach Jeff Blashill told Brett McWethy of DetroitRedWings.com. "Everybody kind of works, but I think we've had really, really strong work ethic and competitiveness in all three games. We're going to have to be. It's an every-night league, and we're going to have to continue to do that."
On Tuesday, rookie Lucas Raymond scored his first NHL goal and now has three points (1G, 2A) in three career games.
Thomas Greiss made 22 saves in the victory.

2. 'PITTER'-PATTER

Let's get at 'er.
Tyler Pitlick could make his Flames debut tonight after missing the first two games (and nearly all of the preseason) with a lower-body injury.
The 29-year-old appeared in only one exhibition contest before exiting midway through. But after a few weeks in the sick bay, followed by his first full practice with the main group on Tuesday, the physical right-winger is poised to make an impact.
"I feel good. I feel ready," Pitlick said. "The only way you can really be ready is to do it. So, get in there and play and I'll be fine."
Pitlick was acquired from the Seattle Kraken for a fourth-round pick in the off-season.
Many around these parts have been eager to see the Minneapolis native in game action, and for good reason. He brings an awful lot of skill to this roster, including a soft set of hands, great wheels, and the hard-hitting physical aspect that makes him a thorn to play against.
The sandpaper-y sort are always in high demand.
Pitlick, too, is hungry to show why.
"This team works hard," said Pitlick, who had six goals and 11 points in 38 games with the Arizona Coyotes last year. "I think I'm going to fit in there. That's what I do - I work hard and play physical. I'm going to create energy and help the guys get going. You know, a big hit on the first shift, stuff like that. So, I think I can help there."

Pitlick, who has 286 nights of big-league employ on his resume, has had injuries derail things in the past.
However, he's grown from those experiences, and doesn't let the mental grind of it all drag down his mood.
Or motivation.
"I've been through it before," Pitlick said. "I know the drill. You can either feel sorry for yourself and get to work and get better and be ready to go when you're ready.
"Now it's about playing well, staying healthy and contributing and helping the team."

Flames - Andrew Mangiapane
Has anyone in red played better than No. 88 so far?
Mangiapane has a goal and 10 shots through the first two games, displaying his usual buzzsaw approach on the ice with his neverending tenacity.

Red Wings - Moritz Seider
Steve Yzerman shocked the world when the Red Wings drafted Seider with the sixth pick in 2019.
(No, really. The GASP! from the crowd that night in Vancouver was loud.)
But now, in his first season with the Red Wings, Seider is showing exactly what that Top-10 pedigree is all about.
The 20-year-old has three assists in three games, and has played more than 20 minutes in each outing.

5. HE SAID IT

"You have to accentuate the positive things and clean up little areas. We have some guys that have to be better players for us. Even after the two games, in the little details of the game, they have to be better. For the type of team we have, they have to be better players in order for us to win games. You know the old line about you can't out-score your mistakes? It really holds true for our club."
