Devils Edge Rangers in Critical Late-Season Victory | GAME STORY

In a game with a lot of playoff implications, the Devils netted a huge victory toward home-ice against their heated rival

by Sam Kasan SamiKasan / Devils Beat Reporter

With pride, bragging rights and possibly home-ice advantage in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs on the line, it was the Devils that got the best of their cross-river rivals, the New York Rangers, 2-1, Thursday night at Prudential Center.

With the victory, New Jersey extends its lead on the Rangers to four points for the No. 2 seed and home-ice in a possible first-round showdown with the Blueshirts with seven games remaining.

"It did have that (playoff) feel," head coach Lindy Ruff said. "Energy in the building again, how tight the game was."

Erik Haula and Timo Meier scored the goals for the Devils.

Chris Kreider scored the lone Rangers tally.

"This morning it felt like it was already playoffs," Haula said. "Everyone keeps talking about us and the Rangers. It was exaclty what people expected it to be. It was tight. It's going to close games, a lot of skill, a lot of speed.

"I think we took a step. It was a full game. It was tight. They have lines that can score. I thought we executed our game plan pretty well."

Devils Vanquished by Islanders, Palmieri in 5-1 Loss | GAME STORY

Former Devil Kyle Palmieri had a two-goal, three-point night against his former team

by Amanda Stein amandacstein / Lead Reporter, NJD.TV

The New York Islanders are desperate for points as they cling to a Wild Card spot in the East.

And the New Jersey Devils found out just how desperate with every hit, and every puck battle, the Islanders were relentless and Ilya Sorokin was a wall for the Islanders in net.

The Devils leave Long Island without a point in a 5-1 lossstymied by the Islanders. Longtime Devil, now Islander Kyle Palmieri had a three-point night (2g, 1a) to haunt his former team and lead the Islanders to victory.

"Obviously they're fighting for a playoff spot, they're desperate," Timo Meier said post-game, "I thought over the full game they won more battles, they were harder on pucks and that's what cost us the game. We've got to find a way to get that next gear in."

Erik Haula had the lone New Jersey goal, beating Sorokin with a shorthanded shot. A second puck would make it past Sorokin in the third period, only to be called off for a kicking motion.

Pierre Engvall opened the scoring for New York, and Bo Horvat and Zach Parise both hit the empty net for the Islanders' fourth and fifth goal.

The Devils return to action on Thursday night against the New York Rangers who remain four points back of the Devils.

"I think that we clinched a spot (last game), and I don't know if our group dealt with that," head coach Lindy Ruff said, "It's a learning experience. You're excited about where you got to, but you've got to put it away in a hurry and I didn't think we put it away in a hurry."
