SHENZHEN, China- It came a day later than expected, but the Bruins' first official practice of the 2018-19 season is in the books.
Boston's opening session of training camp was scheduled for Thursday, but the team's gear - as well as the Calgary Flames' - was held up in customs upon its arrival in Shenzhen on Wednesday evening, causing both teams to scrap practice.

Eventually, the equipment was cleared and the Black & Gold got to work on Friday with a spirited practice at Shenzhen Universiade Sports Center.
"I think you've got to take it in stride," said Brad Marchand. "I think you have to expect a little bit of that anytime you travel this far to a foreign country. Things get lost in translation with the amount of stuff we're taking over. It can be difficult at times, but we're going to roll with the punches and [that allowed] us to get together a little bit more.
"With the amount of young guys that we have you get the opportunity to get to know each other a little bit better and build some relationships with the new guys."

With a day of work lost, Bruce Cassidy's practice plans required some slight tweaks, leading him and his coaching staff to jam in a bit more than usual for Day 1 of training camp. Cassidy put his players through the paces during two 45-minute sessions, which included some conditioning and special teams work.
"That's just a bit of the challenge you get every once in a while," said Cassidy. "Having said that, these guys have been skating in Boston and the rookies have in the rookie camp, so they're not starting from scratch."
The limited practice time does, however, cost Cassidy some valuable observation time. With a number of young players - i.e. Trent Frederic, Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, and Jack Studnicka - competing for roster spots, they now have one less opportunity to make an impression on the staff.
"[It] is a loss of a day for that part, we don't get to evaluate anybody. That's too bad," said Cassidy. "The guys that are in a little bit more competitive environment, they lose a day. It's not going to hurt Brad Marchand, he's going to enjoy his time here, he's on the team and he's going to play a big role.
"For the other guys it does - and for [the coaches]. When you ask me about being frustrated, it's no the delay; you lose a day of your eyes on these players when you kind of have a limited viewing as it is. It makes [Friday] and the next day that much more important."

Taking Advantage

The unexpected downtime did allow the Bruins to take in some extra sightseeing on Thursday evening. Cassidy and assistant coaches Jay Pandolfo, Kevin Dean, and Bob Essensa made the hour drive to Hong Kong where they grabbed dinner and enjoyed the vast views of the city's skyline.
"We went to Hong Kong, it was beautiful," said Cassidy. "It was a great trip, unbelievable city. It was a great experience for us to take advantage of."

Back in Action

Some five months after fracturing his ankle, Brandon Carlo was a full participant for the first practice of the season. The 21-year-old reported no ill effects from the grueling session.
"It was good. We had three D on our side, so a lot of reps which was fun," said Carlo. "Challenging as well to come back conditioning-wise with that, but overall felt pretty good. Felt like my recovery was pretty fast. I enjoyed the challenge today and it was a lot of fun."
Carlo was paired with prospects Jakub Zboril and Urho Vaakanainen and found himself providing them with some pointers throughout the nearly two-hour practice. As he enters his third season in the NHL, the Colorado native is beginning to embrace more of veteran mindset.
"A little bit," said Carlo. "Knowing the systems a little bit more - PK, things like that - I can help the guys move around on the ice and go where they need to go. So from that aspect, yes."
