The Blackhawks battled back from two- and one-goal deficits on the night to pick up a standings point, but fell to the Carolina Hurricanes in a shootout in the first meeting of the season, 4-3.
Philipp Kurashev, Patrick Kane and Dylan Strome all scored for Chicago on the night, while Kevin Lankinen made a season-high 38 saves in the shootout defeat.

Carolina opened the scoring early off 3-on-2 rush as Jordan Staal beat Nikita Zadorov along the wall and slid a backhand pass to the trailer Andrei Svechnikov with backchecker David Kampf unable to catch him on the drive to the crease. Svechnikov beat Lankinen at the back post for a 1-0 lead.

1st - 14:46 - Warren Foegele (Jordan Staal, Brady Skeji)

The Canes doubled their advantage before the period's end with the same line finding twine on a cross-slot feed. Calvin de Haan blocked a Brady Skeji shot in front, only to see Jordan Staal quickly pick up the loose puck in the slot and find the late-arriving Warren Foegele on the weak side for the tally.

1st - 17:58 - Philipp Kurashev (Pius Suter, Dominik Kubalik)

The Blackhawks got on the board with some tic-tac-toe puck movement on the power play late in the opening frame. Dominik Kubalik on the left side went cross-ice to Pius Suter on the far side, who quickly sent it back across the crease to Philipp Kurashev at the backdoor for his fourth tally of the season, cutting the lead to 2-1.

1st - 19:42 - Patrick Kane (Alex DeBrincat)

In the dying seconds of the first, Patrick Kane notched his fifth of the year to deadlock the game, 2-2. Alex DeBrincat forced a turnover from Jaccob Slavin in the Canes' end, with Kane picking up the deflected puck and walking to the high slot before firing a wrister past James Reimer with just 18 seconds to play.

3rd - 6:50 - Vincent Trocheck (Nino Niederreiter, Brett Pesce)

Following a scoreless middle frame, Carolina regained the lead in the third off another blocked puck in front. Following a faceoff win, Brett Pesce took a shot from the point that was turned aside by Lankinen. Nino Niederreiter's shot off the rebound richoceted off a body in front and right to Vincent Trocheck on the weak side for a quick shot into the open goal and a 3-2 lead.

3rd - 13:21 - Dylan Strome (Alex DeBrincat, Dominik Kubalik)

The Blackhawks answered yet again just past the midway point of the period as the second line all chipped in on the equalizer. Dominik Kubalik in the left corner sent the puck behind the goal for Alex DeBrincat in the opposite corner, who quickly found Dylan Strome in the slot for the one-touch tally to make it 3-3.
