Players To Watch 👀

Stars forward Benn recorded two points (1-1—2) in Dallas' last game on Monday night against the San Jose Sharks. Benn’s goal was the 23rd of his career against the Sharks, which is the second-most of any active skater according to NHL Stats, trailing only Corey Perry (31). Benn enters Thursday's matchup having totaled 994 career points (415-579—994), making him six points shy of reaching the 1,000-point milestone. He will become the second player in both franchise history and team history to total 1,000 points for the team. Benn is also pacing to become the 13th active skater to reach the milestone and second fifth-round draft pick in NHL history to total 1,000 career points, joining Alexander Mogily who finished his career with 1,032 points (473-559—1032). In his career against Buffalo, Benn has tallied 23 points (12-11—23) in 27 games played, upholding a plus-minus rating of +10. Two of his 12 goals against them have been game-winning goals.

Sabres defenseman Owen Power scored the overtime winner and his first goal of the season on Tuesday night against the Minnesota Wild and now enters Thursday's contest riding a three-game point streak to start the season, earning a team-high five points (1-4—5) through those games. He also put up his fourth assist of the season in Tuesday's game, becoming the eighth defenseman in Sabres history to record an assist in the team’s first three games of a season according to NHL Stats. Entering play Wednesday, Power tops all blueliners drafted in 2021 in goals (28) and points (28-117—145) and ranks second in both games played (326) and plus-minus rating (+20). In his career against Dallas, Power has totaled eight points (1-7—8) in eight games played, including having three points (0-3—3) in his last two games played against the Stars. He is also averaging 22:45 of time on ice per game vs. Dallas.

First Shift 🏒

Benn was talking about the frustration of starting slowly in the goal scoring department, and found an amusing silver lining.

The home fans were booing the power play, and the captain said the team needed that.

“I heard the boo birds on the power play. It was awesome,” Benn said with a smile. “Our fans are passionate, that’s why they’re the best. They’ve watched a lot of hockey over the last few years, so they can have their opinions.”

Bottom line, the Stars know what they have to do, and they know the first two games of the season were unacceptable. When Dallas scored one goal and went 0-for-5 on the man advantage, there was real concern. So, players worked individually – and as a team – and put five goals up against San Jose on Monday. Five different players scored – including Benn, Robertson, Joel Kiviranta and Rantanen -and the good vibes were everywhere.

“For all of our guys, Miro, Robo, Rants, Benny…it feels good to get a goal or a couple of assists,” coach Glen Gulutzan said. “It feels good, it helps. I think down the line, you can start feeling good about your game and that will help us.”

The Stars learned some valuable lessons on Monday. Start on time, stay consistent, fire more pucks at the net, get more bodies at the net. When you play from ahead, it really does affect your performance.

“We’ve been talking through it,” said Robertson. “Everyone in the room knows what we need to do.”

So do it again Thursday in Buffalo.

“You want to build off of it, for sure,” Gulutzan said. “We want to clean up some things and keep pushing. We don’t have to sacrifice any defense to get more offense, so we need to just clean up the things we can clean up.”

Defenseman Miro Heiskanen has two goals, and he said that is important.

“It gives us confidence,” Heiskanen said. “You start to build on that and get better each game.”

Kiviranta out, Stars down to 12 forwards

Stars forward Kiviranta blocked a shot on Monday and suffered a lower body injury. He will not be on the two-game road trip and could be out for a week.

“I would hope it’s only a week,” Gulutzan said.

Colin Blackwell is expected to step in. Because of a tight cap and an injury to Matt Duchene, Dallas now has just one extra skater in defenseman Kyle Capobianco.

He Said It 📢

“Again, it’s really a simple recipe. I think I say to our guys all of the time it’s the best league in the world but it’s really the simplest league in the world. We’re playing a young team and a young team that’s on the rise. One way to slow them down is to grind and play in their zone and force them to defend. That slows them down and I thought our guys did a good job of that today.”
