Mark Borowiecki says he hasn't been this excited about hockey in a long time, and it's easy to see why.
The Predators signed the veteran defenseman to a two-year, $4 million contract as free agency opened last October, and the man known as "BoroCop" has fit right in during Nashville's first week of Training Camp Presented by Vanderbilt Health and that doesn't come as a surprise.
Renowned for his physical play, leadership abilities and work in the community, Borowiecki is already winning over his coaches and teammates alike, and they'll be happy to have him on their side this season.

A veteran of nine NHL seasons - all spent with Ottawa - the 6-foot-1, 207-pound blueliner has compiled 51 points (15g-36a) and 647 penalty minutes in 375 career games since making his League debut on Jan. 19, 2012. His 1,505 hits since his first full NHL season in 2014-15 are the third-most among all NHL players. The 31-year-old Borowiecki recorded career highs in goals (7), assists (11), points (18) and average time on ice (17:56) in 53 games last season.
"I had a chance to talk to [General Manager] David Poile and [Head Coach] John Hynes, and they expressed to me that they were looking for a guy like me, someone who had my particular on-ice qualities, but also some things I'm known for off the ice as well," Borowiecki said back in October. "I take a lot of pride in my leadership role in the past and work ethic and what I can bring to a team in that aspect. That's how I made a name for myself, and they seemed like they were very interested in that and it really did seem like a natural fit."
Borowiecki has been skating on a pair with fellow blueliner Matt Benning during camp thus far, and he figures to provide an element on the backend that has been missing in Nashville as of late.
By the Numbers:
- In addition to Borowiecki's 1,505 hits since his first full NHL season in 2014-15 being the third-most among all NHL players, he's 710 hits higher than the next-closest Ottawa skater, and his 585 blocked shots are tied for the second-most on the Sens in that time span.
- Originally drafted by the Senators in the fifth round (139th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Borowiecki has also appeared in 185 career AHL contests with the Binghamton Senators, winning the Calder Cup in 2011 and earning a spot in the AHL All-Star Classic in 2012.
- Prior to turning pro, the Kanata, Ontario, native spent three seasons at Clarkson University, captaining the Golden Knights during his junior year in 2010-11.
Fun Fact:
- Known for being a strong presence in the local community during his time with the Senators, Borowiecki was the honorary captain of the Capital City Condors organization, a family of hockey teams for those in the Ottawa area that are unable to play on any other team due to cognitive or physical disability. In addition to several good Samaritan acts of kindness, he is actively involved with LGBT charities and supports Canadian military members through the Soldier On program.
