SUNRISE, Fla. – The Florida Panthers have loaned goaltender Cooper Black to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League, the organization announced on Friday.

Black had originally been recalled from the AHL on Oct. 13.

In two games with Charlotte this season, Black, who towers between the pipes at 6-foot-8, has posted a 1-1-0 record and a .906 save percentage.

With starting goaltender Jacob Markstrom briefly sidelined by an undisclosed injury, Black had served as Akira Schmid’s backup in each of the last two games for the Panthers.

“It keeps him on a path that I’m sure he sees,” head coach Paul Maurice said of Black’s call-up to the NHL. “He comes out [of college] two years ago and there’s lots of things he needs to work on before you become a pro goaltender. He has good years in the American League. … It’s all the steps that these young goaltenders take on their path to the NHL.”

Sitting at 4-2-2, the Panthers will try to extend their winning streak to three games when they close out their two-game homestand against the Seattle Kraken on Saturday.
