WPG@NJD: Scheifele steals puck, scores OT winner

NEWARK, N.J. -- Mark Scheifele scored his second goal of the game with 17 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Winnipeg Jets a 4-3 win against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Saturday.

Scheifele scored his first overtime goal this season and fifth of his NHL career after stealing the puck from Nico Hischier just inside the Devils blue line and skating through the slot before scoring off his own rebound.
"I saw Hischier] kind of expose it a little bit, so I grabbed it and was pretty exhausted at the time, so [I] just wanted to get a shot off and [was] happy the rebound came to me," Scheifele said. "We didn't want to let our lead slip away, but we did get the win and we're happy with that."

Josh Morrissey and Andrew Copp scored, and Laurent Brossoit made 36 saves for the Jets (15-8-2). The win was the sixth straight by Winnipeg against New Jersey dating to Nov. 29, 2016.
"There was lots of emotion and [Scheifele] was wired all night," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "I thought he was really good and battled defensively. As a leader, he took it very seriously and competed really hard."
Jesper Bratt had a goal and an assist, Marcus Johansson and Taylor Hall scored, and Keith Kinkaid made 34 saves for the Devils (9-11-5), who have lost five straight.

Brossoit denied Hall while sliding to his left off a 2-on-0 break with Hischier 45 seconds into overtime.
"You know what, sometimes I don't mind a 2-on-0," Brossoit said. "A lot of the times the opposing players will complicate things rather than just a breakaway where they'll just shoot it on goal. I was lucky I was able to come across to make the save."
Morrissey scored at 10:32 of the third period, and Copp at 13:21 to give the Jets a 3-1 lead before Bratt and Hall scored in a span of 2:23.
"We were coming in back-to-back versus a rested team," Devils coach John Hynes said of New Jersey, which lost 6-3 at the Washington Capitals on Friday. "I really liked the way our team played. Even though we got down when we gave up a couple of goals in the third, to get two goals in under five minutes in the third, we worked our way into a point."
Bratt pulled the Devils within 3-2 on a power-play goal at 15:41, and Hall tied the game after a scramble in the crease with 1:56 remaining and Kinkaid pulled for an extra attacker.

The Jets tied the game 1-1 when Scheifele scored on a slap shot from the left circle at 4:25 of the second period.
"We look at [Scheifele and Blake Wheeler] as drivers of our team and again [Saturday], like every other night, they're driving," Morrissey said. "[Wheeler] made an unbelievable pull-up and then threads the needle to [Scheifele] on that first goal.
"In overtime, [Scheifele] hustles back, and makes an unbelievable play after going hard into the boards earlier in the overtime. But that's the character he has; he made a huge play to score the OT winner."

Johansson scored for a second straight game to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead at 6:45 of the first period. The goal came six seconds after Kinkaid made a save on Jack Roslovic.
Winnipeg right wing Patrik Laine, named the NHL's First Star of the Month for November on Saturday, was held without a point for the second time in his past eight games. He scored 18 goals in November and had 13 goals in his previous six games entering Saturday.

They said it

"[Brossoit] got my attention Day Three in training camp. We're doing a real loose drill and he stopped Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, and Blake Wheeler. So that opened everyone's eyes. He's real competitive, a hard worker, and he brought that right into the regular season." -- Jets coach Paul Maurice

WPG@NJD: Brossoit stones Hall on a 2-on-0 in overtime

"I think we're just trying to be too pretty; we just need to shoot. Make the goaltender make a save, not overpass to our player and have them come back the other way. We've got to put pucks on net. We certainly had plenty of opportunities, but we didn't put the puck in the net." -- Devils goalie Keith Kinkaid
