GLENDALE-- Needing a win, or at least some momentum, before heading out on a tricky two-game road trip this week, the Coyotes were badly outplayed by the Calgary Flames on Sunday in front of a matinee crowd at Gila River Arena.
Arizona allowed the Flames to score three short-handed goals en route to a resounding 6-1 victory that left the Coyotes and their bench boss scratching their heads. Not only did Arizona allow three shorties during its power plays, it went 0 for 4 with a man advantage and managed zero shots on goal in 7:53 of PP time.

"The power play is horrendous," Head Coach Rick Tocchet said. "It really cost us. The effort on the power play is not there. The 5-on-5 we're fine at, but it's just we lose juice during the power play ... A lot of our best players are on the power play and they have to stick with the program, and right now they're not, and that falls on me."

Tocchet: Need Better Efforts

The Flames scored two goals in each period, all against Coyotes No. 1 goalie Antti Raanta, and former Arizona goalie Mike Smith stopped 28 of 29 shots in his first start since Nov. 15.
The Coyotes finished their five-game homestand with a 1-3-1 record. Opponents outscored Arizona, 17-7, over the five games.
Much like the first few weeks of the season, the Coyotes are having trouble scoring and it's costing them points in the standings.
"I liked our game a little bit better in the first funk," Derek Stepan said. "I think we were making little mistakes within the game that were detail things. Here, I think it's just hockey IQ stuff."

Stepan: 'Let's Regroup'

The Coyotes will play at Minnesota (on Tuesday) and at Nashville (on Thursday) this week. Those teams rank second and first in the Western Conference with 30 and 33 points, respectively.
Tocchet said he'd consider lineup changes to help trigger the offense.
"Maybe I've got to bench a couple (players)," Tocchet said. "I don't want to do that, because if we're going to go anywhere, these guys got to get us out of it. So, I want to make sure they understand that ... I'd like to see some guys have accountability, whether it's, 'I'm the problem,' or whatever, 'I'm going to fix it by doing this.'"
Clayton Keller scored Arizona's lone goal at 13:44 of the third period. The cosmetic goal was Keller's sixth of the season and it ended his 11-game goal-scoring drought.
Nick Cousins skated 13:31 and took three shots on goal in his 200th NHL game.

Hammer: 'Have to Work Harder'

• Trailing 3-0, Raanta made a blocker save on Elias Lindholm's penalty shot at 9:59 of the second period.
• Tocchet yanked Raanta from the game after he allowed Calgary's sixth goal at 4:03 of the third period. Adin Hill, whom Arizona recalled from the American Hockey League on Saturday, replaced Raanta and stopped the one shot he faced in his first appearance of the season.
"It's always exciting every time you get a chance to play in the NHL," Hill said. "Obviously this is not the result we wanted, but it was definitely nice to get my feet on the ice."
• Stats that jump off the Event Summary: Alex Goligoski blocked four shots, Ilya Lyubushkin delivered six hits, and Brad Richardson won 10 of 17 face-offs.

• Flames Head Coach Bill Peters was accidentally struck in the face by a puck lifted off the ice by Richardson early in the second period. Peters was rushed to Calgary's dressing room for stitches and returned to the bench before the second period ended.
"I think it's going to hurt more tomorrow, right?" Peters asked reporters after the game. "One of those things. There's not a lot of room up there. You've got to be paying attention."
• The Coyotes wore lavender sweaters during warm-ups as part of Hockey Fights Cancer Day. The sweaters are now available for purchase via auction at
