An undrafted defenseman, Lyubushkin played four seasons with the Arizona Coyotes before he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Feb. 19, 2022.
He made his professional debut in Russia's second division in 2012-13 and played five seasons for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League before signing a one-year, two-way contract with the Coyotes on May 23, 2018. Lyubushkin played 41 games in 2018-19 and was third among NHL rookies with 150 hits, earning him another one-year contract with Arizona on June 14, 2019 and a third Oct. 5, 2020. He was returned on loan to Lokomotiv until NHL training camps opened Oct. 28 as part of the NHL Return to Play Plan, and had nine assists in 46 games in 2021-22 before he was traded with forward Ryan Dzingel to the Maple Leafs for forward Nick Ritchie and a conditional NHL Draft pick.
