NHL On Tap: Schaefer can equal 1966-67 Orr mark with point for Islanders

There are 12 games on the NHL schedule for Thursday, with one nationally televised in the United States and two in Canada. Thursday also marks the 12th week of "NHL Coast to Coast," a weekly whip-around studio show on Prime Video in Canada that provides live look-ins, highlights and analysis of all the games.

Here are five things to watch today, along with the complete game schedule.

Schaefer city

Rookie Matthew Schaefer looks to join some elite company in the NHL record book when the New York Islanders (24-15-4) visit the Nashville Predators (19-19-4) at Bridgestone Arena to begin a seven-game road trip (8 p.m. ET; HULU; ESPN+). Schaefer has five points (three goals, two assists) during a four-game point streak and can join Bobby Orr as the second 18-year-old defenseman in League history with multiple five-game point streaks in a season (twice in 1966-67). A leading candidate for the Calder Trophy voted as the NHL’s top rookie, Schaefer opened the season with a six-game point streak and can become the second 18-year-old in the past 30 years with multiple five-game point streaks in a single season since Sidney Crosby (four times in 2005-06; longest run, 10 games). The Predators are coming off a 4-3-0 mark during a seven-game road trip.

Connor society

Connor McDavid can match the longest point streak of his NHL career at 17 games when the Edmonton Oilers (21-16-6) face the Winnipeg Jets (15-21-5) at Canada Life Centre (8 p.m. ET; SNW, TSN3). McDavid, who will represent Canada in the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina Olympics, has 39 points (17 goals, 22 assists) during his 16-game run, including a hat trick in a 6-2 win against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. He can become the third active player to hit 40 points during a streak, joining Crosby and Patrick Kane (twice) and the first Oilers player to do it since Wayne Gretzky (44 points in 16 games from Jan. 11-Feb. 8, 1987). McDavid leads the NHL with 75 points (28 goals, 47 assists) in 43 games for Edmonton, which is tied with the Vegas Golden Knights for the Pacific Division lead. The Jets will try to end a 10-game losing streak (0-6-4), the longest since the franchise moved to Winnipeg from Atlanta in 2011.

Auston's power

Auston Matthews looks to keep scoring and the Toronto Maple Leafs (20-15-7) will try to keep racking up points when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers (22-12-7) at Xfinity Mobile Arena (7 p.m. ET; NBCSP, TSN4, TVAS). The Maple Leafs captain, who will play for the United States at the Olympics, has a three-game streak with at least one goal and 11 points (seven goals, four assists) in a five-game point streak that has helped spur Toronto to a 5-0-2 mark in its past seven games. The Flyers, 4-2-0 in their past six games, are coming off an emotional 5-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks, as forward Trevor Zegras scored twice against his former team.

Sid-sational

As Crosby goes, so goes the Pittsburgh Penguins, and all pistons are pumping right now. Crosby can extend his point streak to eight games and the Penguins (20-12-9) go for their sixth straight win when they host the New Jersey Devils (22-19-2) at PPG Paints Arena (7 p.m. ET; SN-PIT, MSGSN). The Penguins captain, who will play for Canada in the Olympics, has 12 points (five goals, seven assists) during his run, including a game-winning goal and an assist in a 5-4 overtime victory at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday that made him the first player in NHL history with 50 career overtime points (25 goals, 25 assists). The Devils will try to regroup from a 9-0 loss to the Islanders on Tuesday and a 2-5-1 skid in their past eight games.

Surging in Seattle

Jared McCann and the Seattle Kraken (20-14-7) can stretch their winning streak to a season-high five games and stretch their point streak (8-0-1) to nine games when they host the Minnesota Wild (25-11-8) at Climate Pledge Arena (10 p.m.; FDSNWI, FDSNNOX, KHN/Prime, KONG). Forwards McCann and Kaapo Kakko have led the way for Seattle of late; McCann has six points (three goals, three assists) in a five-game point streak and Kakko, who will play for Finland in the Olympics, has six points (two goals, four assists) in a four-game run, including two goals and an assist in a 7-4 win against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. The Wild are coming off 5-4 (overtime) and 4-2 losses at the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday and Monday; the latter ended a six-game point streak (3-0-3).
