A gifted two-way center, McCann was selected by the Vancouver Canucks with the No. 24 pick of the 2014 NHL Draft following his second season with Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League.
McCann played one more season with Sault Ste. Marie, scoring 81 points (34 goals, 47 assists) in 56 games in 2014-15, made the Canucks roster out of training camp and quickly made an impact. He scored his first NHL goal Oct. 10, 2015, against the Calgary Flames, in his second game and scored five goals in his first nine games. He finished with 18 points (nine goals, nine assists) in 69 games.

The Canucks traded McCann to the Florida Panthers on May 25, 2016, and he split the 2016-17 season between Florida and Springfield of the American Hockey League.
On Feb. 1, 2019, McCann was traded by the Panthers to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and he scored 11 goals in 32 games to help the Penguins qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
McCann helped Canada win the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup in 2013, place third at the Under-18 World Championship in 2014 and finish second in the 2019 World Championship, when he scored five points (two goals, three assists) in 10 games.
