Red Wings team scope

The Detroit Red Wings will play their first game since their 5-4 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2017 Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic on Sunday. Goaltender Petr Mrazek will start Wednesday after getting three of the past four games off. Mrazek is 1-2-0 in his past three starts. "There's a greater spotlight on the goaltender position and that's just the reality of the position, but I would say that Petr welcomes that," coach Jeff Blashill said. "He's worked hard at his game and he just needs to go out and play a good hockey game, and the team in front of him needs to play a good hockey game." Mrazek has worked to improve aspects of his play. "I think the technical stuff, when I change it helps me to be not so aggressive in the net and not be that wide," Mrazek said. "I have to go out there and show what I do in practice in the game."

Ducks team scope

The Anaheim Ducks will be without captain Ryan Getzlaf on Wednesday. Getzlaf left the Ducks 4-3 overtime win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday with a lower-body injury after one shift in the third period. The injury is not believed to be long-term, coach Randy Carlyle said. "He's better, but he will not play tonight," Carlyle said. "He's making day-to-day progress with the lower body." Anaheim gave up 55 shots on goal against the Flyers, and spent the past two days working on defensive systems during practice. "I feel like we play great in big parts of the game," forward Rickard Rakell said, "but then we'll have some long periods of time where nothing is happening and we're letting up some quality scoring chances. It's tough to say exactly what it is, because if we knew we would have corrected it a long time ago. But all we can do is try to get better moving forward."

Status report

There may be game-time decisions regarding Detroit's lineup, Blashill said. … The Ducks did not take line rushes during the morning skate, but Vermette moved up to the center the top line when Getzlaf missed three games with an upper-body injury in November. … Wagner was recalled from San Diego of the American Hockey League on Tuesday and likely will center the third line if Vermette moves up. … Gibson was the first goalie off the ice for Anaheim.
