Hertl records fourth career hat trick in win over CGY

SAN JOSE --Tomas Hertl had a hat trick and Adin Hill made 40 saves for the San Jose Sharks, who rallied for a 5-3 win against the Calgary Flames at SAP Center on Tuesday.

Logan Couture had a goal and two assists, and Erik Karlsson had a goal and an assist for San Jose (14-11-1), which had lost two straight. Brent Burns and Alexander Barabanov each had two assists.
"I thought it was a response game for us," Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. "Between the second and third we said 'Look, we're in the same position we were in last game (a 6-4 loss at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday) and we've got to show that we learned from it, and also show some maturity in our game.'"

Adam Ruzicka scored his first NHL goal, and Dan Vladar made 22 saves for Calgary (15-6-5), which has lost two in a row after winning its previous three.
"Disappointing. Disappointing," Flames coach Darryl Sutter said. "Missing nets, missing assignments, turning pucks over. We've got to be better than that."
Dillon Dube gave the Flames a 1-0 lead at 1:37 of the first period when his shot off a centering pass from Milan Lucic deflected in off the skate of Mario Ferraro.
Hertl scored a power-play goal to tie it 1-1 at 8:58.
Johnny Gaudreau put the Calgary back in front 2-1 at 11:55 after Matthew Tkachuk sent him a no-look, between-the-legs pass from behind San Jose's net.

Ruzicka extended the lead to 3-1 at 4:31 of the second period when he knocked in his own rebound from in front.
"Great feeling for me and for my family watching from back home (in Slovakia), but I'm pretty upset that we lost this one," Ruzicka said.
Karlsson cut it to 3-2 at 10:08, beating Vladar five-hole on a breakaway after exiting the penalty box and receiving a pass from Couture, who then tied it 3-3 at 14:27 when he redirected Karlsson's point shot on the power play.
"Feels good right now after a tough end to our road trip there," Couture said. "Both games that we lost on the road trip, we had a sour taste left in our mouths. So down 3-1, it could have gone either way there, and I'm glad we stuck with it.
"[Karlsson's goal] gave us some energy. Brought some energy back into the building."

The Sharks were 2-for-2 with the man-advantage after going 1-for-12 in their previous six games. The Flames were 0-for-3.
"Special teams was the difference tonight," Boughner said. "Good things happen when you compete that hard, and special teams took over."
Hertl gave San Jose a 4-3 lead at 18:10 of the second on a rebound below the left circle. He completed the hat trick by shooting into an empty net at 19:18 of the third period for the 5-3 final.
"I'm just happy we won today because it was a tough game against a really good team," Hertl said. "We're in a pretty good spot, but we need every point to stay in the race."
NOTES: Hertl's hat trick was his fourth in the NHL. … Couture's assist on Hertl's empty-net goal was his 600th NHL point. He has scored 281 goals and 319 assists in 793 games, all with San Jose.
