NEWARK, N.J. --Mikael Backlund scored 1:13 into overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 4-3 win against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Friday.
Sean Monahan, Kris Versteeg, and Matt Stajan also scored and Brian Elliott made 26 saves for the Flames (27-24-3), who have won three straight.

"We had possession of the puck and I saw TJ Brodie] and went to get into a passing lane and he made a real nice pass to me," Backlund, who scored his 15th goal of the season, said. "[Devils goalie Cory Schneider] is a quick goalie, so I shot it high and quick."

Brodie finished with four assists; he's the first Flames defenseman to have that many since Dion Phaneuf in a 4-3 win at the St. Louis Blues on Dec. 5, 2008.
"I had a long meeting with Brodie and told him I wanted him to shoot more pucks and not pass so much and make sure he's getting pucks on the net and he gets four assists," Flames coach Glen Gulutzan said. "He didn't listen to me at all so I'm going to take credit for those assists."
Adam Henrique, Pavel Zacha and Kyle Palmieri scored, and Schneider made 34 saves for the Devils (21-21-10). New Jersey has lost seven straight game at home (0-5-2).
"Both teams played with some pace, had some chances," Schneider said. "For us it's tough to have the lead going into the third and not coming away with two points."
Stajan tied the game at 3-3 when he redirected a pass from Brodie from the slot 7:22 into the third.
The Devils were trailing 2-0 but scored three unanswered goals in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. Henrique and Zacha scored in a span of 3:03 midway through the period for a 2-2 tie, before Palmieri gave the Devils a 3-2 lead on a power-play goal with 24 seconds left.
"I don't think you look at it for moral victories," Palmieri said. "It's time to string wins together. A point is nice but we need two points."
Versteeg scored a power-play goal 22 seconds into the second period off a slap shot from the top of the right circle to give the Flames a 2-0 lead.
Monahan scored the 99th goal of his career with Troy Brouwer providing a screen three seconds after a holding penalty to Devils defenseman Ben Lovejoy expired to give the Flames a 1-0 lead 17:15 into the first period.

Goal of the game

Monahan scored his team-leading 19th goal of the season off a wrist shot from the left circle to give the Flames a 1-0 lead.
"I just saw a little spot there and lucky enough, it went in," Monahan said. "I actually thought it went off the crossbar and up but I looked at Brouwer and he was celebrating so that was a little bit of relief."

Save of the game

Elliott used his right shoulder to deny Devils left wing Taylor Hall off a wrist shot from the left circle to keep the game scoreless 13:30 into the first period.
"Elliott's been playing great and he kept us in it all night," Monahan said.

Highlight of the game

Palmieri scored his 14th of the season on a power move to the slot, knocking over defenseman Mark Giordano and scoring to give the Devils the lead in the second period.

Unsung performance of the game

Flames left wing and New Jersey native Johnny Gaudreau didn't score, but had two assists and two shots on goal in 18:28. He also generated scoring chances, including a no-look backhand pass from the right-wing half boards onto the tape of Monahan for a shot that Schneider stopped 10:04 into the third with the game tied at 3-3.

They said it

"We're trying to create belief. We talked about playing a certain way and not getting the results a couple weeks ago, but we still had to believe in ourselves. A lot of things are trending in the right direction and we just have to believe in ourselves. We need to keep playing a certain way and that's what we did tonight." -- Flames coach Glen Gulutzan
"We have to find a way to win at home. Obviously we started the year great at home (8-0-2). Right now it has gone the opposite way. We have to find a way to put points on the board whether we are on the road or at home. It doesn't matter." -- Devils center Adam Henrique
