CHICAGO – The Winnipeg Jets will be without the services of star defenceman Josh Morrissey for a longer period than they hoped.
The 31-year-old left the October 7 match-up against the Colorado Avalanche with an upper-body injury in the second period. Initially, Morrissey was listed as day-to-day as the team worked to gather more information on the nature of the injury, which was sustained late in the first period against the Avalanche when Morrissey hit T.J. Hughes into the boards.
Jets head coach Scott Arniel delivered the news on Thursday that Morrissey is now week-to-week.
“Right now we’re going week-to-week and we’ll just play that timeline,” said Arniel, adding that surgery isn’t required.
Morrissey had three assists in the four games he’s played this season and is averaging 20:04 of ice time per game.
In other injury news on the back end, Elias Salomonsson continues his journey back to the line-up after off-season shoulder surgery. He’s been in a regular practice jersey for nearly a week and is working to get into game shape.
“We’re getting him banged around a little bit here with the contact. We’ll see where it is and then we’ll look at our options probably Saturday or Sunday,” said Arniel. “If he’s good to go, we’ll discuss whether he stays with us or goes to the Moose. We have to make sure we come out of this healthy as well.”
