MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation has announced donations of $1.1 million to support 73 organizations working for the well-being of underprivileged children across Quebec, so they can continue to offer these kids opportunities to adopt healthy lifestyles through sports and physical activity.

These donations come in addition to the investment of $1.7 million made earlier this year for the implementation of the Foundation's 11th BLEU BLANC BOUGE refrigerated outdoor community rink, inaugurated in Joliette in January.

While the present context is causing an increase in the need for food and other essential services, the Foundation wants to reassure organizations that promote active lifestyles for underprivileged children. The Foundation hopes that the contributions announced today will allow them to maintain their operations and prepare for the return to their normal activities and programs.

"We are aware of the impact COVID-19 has on everyone's life. This is why we believe it is important to continue supporting all these organizations and foundations that respond daily to the different needs of children in our communities, needs that are likely to increase in the coming months, or even in the coming year," explained Geneviève Paquette, General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation. "It is essential that children maintain good health and remain active during this difficult period, and that they also have the chance to participate in sports and physical activities when we can all resume our activities."

The funding granted to these organizations will allow, among other things, access to active day camps, the purchase of sports equipment, the development and refurbishing of active and safe infrastructures, and access to programs to discover and practice various sports for more than 30,000 children across Quebec.

Although some of its programs are currently halted, with the closures of schools and community centres, the Foundation continues to operate and has taken steps to follow up on its programs and maintain its connections with the numerous organizations it supports. The Foundation is also taking this opportunity to enhance the way it reaches out to vulnerable communities and children in the province by offering on its various platforms ideas to get kids moving, advice on healthy lifestyles, and amplify messages and provide educational tools from its many partners.

About the Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation

The Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation is a non-profit organization that encourages physical activity and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle among underprivileged youth aged 4 to 17 years old. Since its inception in August 2000, the Foundation has invested over $32 million in the community. The Foundation fulfills its mandate in two ways: first, through a unique flagship project - the BLEU BLANC BOUGE program - which consists of building and activating community refrigerated and multisport rinks; secondly, by providing financial support to more than 870 charitable endeavours, working for the well-being of the most vulnerable children across the province of Quebec, whose projects and programs enable children to adopt healthy lifestyles by being more active.
