MONTREAL - On Saturday, the semifinal round of the 2023 IIHF World Championship was underway at Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland.

Here's a recap of the performances of the Canadiens' players and prospects:

CANADA 4 - 2 LATVIA

Team Canada defeated the tournament co-hosts in front of a loud and passionate pro-Latvian crowd.

Named Player of the Game for Canada in the quarterfinal, Sam Montembeault received a vote of confidence from head coach Andre Tourigny to start in net for the sixth time in nine games.

Trailing after two periods, the Canadians only needed 45 seconds to tie the game at the start of the third frame.

Midway through the stanza, blue-chip prospect Adam Fantilli gave Canada the lead to bring the score to 3-2. Justin Barron earned a secondary assist on the goal.

The defenseman spent 9:40 on the ice and took one of his squad's 35 shots on goaltender Arturs Silovs. The final tally of the game was scored in an empty net.

Montembeault, MacKenzie Weegar and Lawson Crouse were named the top players of the tournament for Canada. The Habs netminder made 20 saves.

USA 3 - 4 GERMANY (OT)

The United States suffered their first loss of the event in a tightly contested semifinal.

While the Stars and Stripes dominated early in the game with a 2-0 lead, the Germans brought both clubs back to square one before the end of the first period.

They found the equalizer once again thanks to Marcel Noebels, forcing extra time with a little over a minute left in regulation.

Frederik Tiffels and the Germans stunned the Stars and Stripes late in overtime to secure their spot in the final.

Defenseman Lane Hutson logged 16:54 of ice time, while forward Sean Farrell registered two shots on goal in 12:55.

Prospect Luke Tuch did not dress.
