THREE THINGS: Training Camp Scrimmage recap

There were plenty of goals late as Team Red eventually overpowered Team White 6-4 at the Blackhawks annual Training Camp Scrimmage.
Red struck first at 10:50 of the opening frame. Goaltender Anton Forsberg tried to play a loose puck behind the net, but Matthew Highmore beat him to it, throwing a pass out in front to the slot. Jordan Schroeder fired the puck into a wide-open net for the 1-0 tally.

The second period went by scoreless, with rookie goaltender Alexis Gravel making a few saves from close range throughout the frame. One came when Kane streaked in and tried to bank the puck off the youngster, but Gravel covered it up.
Team Red had a power-play opportunity late in the frame, but Team White managed to kill it off and the score remained 1-1 after two.

At 3:33 of the third, David Kampf put Team White on top 2-1. Dominik Kahun passed the puck out in front from behind the net and Kampf used his body to shield it from the defender. He then buried a shot for the go-ahead tally.
Team Red responded quickly when 2018 fourth-round pick Philipp Kurashev snuck behind Team White's defenders for a breakaway but his shot was saved by Collin Delia. The rebound, however, came out to Highmore and he deposited it into the back of the net.

White took back the lead, 3-2, at 9:48 of the third. Erik Gustafsson's wrister from the high slot found its way past Kevin Lankinen to light the lamp.
Team Red was able to tie the game at 3-3 with just 15.5 seconds remaining. Victor Ejdsell set up Dylan Sikura back door with a nice feed for the equalizer.

The game went to a 10-minute, 3-on-3 overtime, which was scheduled to be played in its entirety. There, Sikura, Jonathan Toews and Artem Anisimov all scored for Team Red, while Kane scored for White. Here are three takeaways from the game.

1. PATRICK KANE DOES HIS THING

Kane continues to score pretty goals, even against his own teammates. Do you expect anything less from 88?
At 16:19 of the first period, Kane took the puck for a skate around the offensive zone. As he cut down low toward the net he ripped a shot top-shelf in the far corner.

In the second, Kane tried to bank the puck in off Alexis Gravel for another nifty score, but it was covered up by the young goalie.
Kane hammered a slap shot from the point in OT as well to bring his total to two goals on the afternoon.

2. EJDSELL TO SIKURA STRIKES TWICE

The duo of Ejdsell and D. Sikura hooked up not once but twice, and in important moments. Ejdsell found Sikura with 15.5 seconds left in the third for a game-tying goal. The backdoor feed was a nice, timely play for Ejdsell.

"Obviously, it was a tremendous play there to tie it up late," said Blackhawks Head Coach Joel Quenneville. "I thought Dylan had a nice game. I thought he had some good pace to his game. He looked a little quicker than we've seen. I think one of the things with him is his effectiveness with the puck and play recognition is a strength. And Victor, I thought he had a good third period. As the game progressed, he got going. I think his assets, which are shooting and with the puck, are strengths. Having more pace to the game could really complement him."
The forward also found Sikura in OT when he set him up in the high slot. Sikura stepped up and scored. The two young forwards are battling for roster spots in Training Camp and they followed up their strong NHL Prospects Tournament with a good showing at the United Center.

3. LANKINEN IMPRESSIVE

23-year-old goaltender Kevin Lankinen made the save of the game in overtime. Kane led the way down the ice on a 3-on-1 rush and set up Nick Schmaltz perfectly for a one-timer, but the shot was robbed by the blocker of a diving Lankinen.
The crowd went nuts.
Later in the OT period, Lankinen made an initial stop but the puck trickled behind him. He flicked his stick back to clear the puck away from danger. Jonathan Toews came back the other way to score and make it 5-3.
Lankinen was signed this summer after spending 2017-18 with HIFK in Finland. There he had a 1.33 GAA and .946 save percentage. It was a nice game for the young netminder.
