The Stars on Wednesday came up with another patented comeback. The only problem is the Colorado Avalanche matched them and found a way to squeeze out a chaotic 6-4 in win in Game 3 of their best-of-seven second round playoff series.
Dallas was within 10 minutes of taking a 3-0 series lead, but Colorado tied the game and then came up with the game-winning goal in a span of three minutes, making it a 2-1 series and setting up a fantastic Game 4 on Friday.

"Listen, there's no chance we thought we were going to sweep this hockey club," Stars coach Rick Bowness said of the second seed in the Western Conference. "That's a very good team over there. We knew it was probably going to be a six- or seven-game series. We're not going to dominate that hockey club, they're too good, they're too talented. There's not much separating these two teams and the game tonight shows it. "
Dallas was able to take a 2-0 lead in the series by not only playing smart hockey for long stretches, but by responding to adversity. Dallas was down 2-0 in Game 2 and reeled off four straight goals. The Stars came up big in big moments as goalie Anton Khudobin was huge in the first two games and players like Roope Hintz, Radek Faksa and Esa Lindell came up with big goals.
But the Avalanche flipped the script Wednesday.
Theywere the team that came up with goals from throughout the lineup.

DAL Recap: Stars' rally falls short in 6-4 loss

Theywere the team that got big saves from their "backup" goalie Pavel Francouz.
Theywere the team that responded positively to adversity.
After Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin connected on a great goal to give Dallas a 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the first period, Colorado rallied with three second period goals from Nikita Zadorov, Andre Burakovsky and Gabriel Landeskog to take a 3-1 lead. This time, the Stars made a few mistakes. This time, Khudobin wasn't quite so fine. This time, Colorado was the team gaining confidence.
It was huge for a squad that really couldn't afford to lose this game. It was huge for a squad many predicted to dominate this series.
"There are twists and turns to (the playoffs). There are ups and downs," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. "The team that wins is the team that's mentally strong and can adapt and overcome things put in their path."
The Stars did that once again. Denis Gurianov scored 4:42 into the third period to cut the deficit to 3-2, Blake Comeau fired in his second goal of the playoffs at the 9:02 mark, and then Benn won a faceoff back to Esa Lindell and rolled to the slot, where Lindell's shot deflected off Benn and into the net for a 4-3 lead at the 10:47 mark.

COL@DAL, Gm3: Benn tips puck home off draw

It seemed like a huge blow to the Avalanche, who had struggled with consistency in this series. But, out of nowhere, Miro Heiskanen had a bad turnover that helped lead to a Miko Rantanen goal at the 12:02 mark to tie the game back up, and Nazem Kadri tipped in a Kevin Connauton shot to give Colorado the lead once again.
It could be called a collapse by the Stars, but Bowness didn't see it that way. Yes, Heiskanen had a rough third period and finished the game minus-3, but the coach said that's just hockey.
"Stuff happens in the game of hockey," Bowness said. "That fourth goal of their's, we have control of the puck and we fall down. They make a great play, that's hockey. There's things out there that we can't control. They made a good play and they made us pay."
Just as the Stars have made Colorado pay at times during this series.
And even though this particular loss is disappointing, even though Heiskanen had to fight off a cross-check late in the game that may have hobbled him, even though Khudobin's confidence might be shaken, the Stars are pretty happy having a 2-1 lead in the series.
"We gave them a couple of goals in the second period, which is a little upsetting - a couple of easy goals. So we can fix that," Bowness said. "If it takes six or seven games, that's what it takes. We'll respond. We responded when we were down 3-1, we've responded all year to challenges like we faced tonight, and I'm confident in that room in our leadership and character of our players, and their desire to win. And I'm very confident we'll respond next game."
