The Dallas Stars dug themselves an early hole Friday night in Anaheim and couldn't climb out, falling 5-3 to the Ducks at Honda Center.
The Stars fell behind 2-0 just six-and-a-half minutes into the game and were down 4-1 by early in the second period. They made a game of it, pulling to within 4-3, but they couldn't get the equalizer before the Ducks extended the lead with a late goal.

"We were behind the eight ball to start," said Stars goaltender Mike McKenna. "We just never dug our way out of it. Not the way we wanted it to go."
"They're in the playoffs, and we're not," said Stars defenseman Marc Methot. "We're trying to play for pride, and I'd like to think that everyone's putting in everything they got here to finish it off at least for the organization, for the fans. I don't think that maybe we were all in tonight, but that's the nature of the beast at this time of year.
"It's tough, and we have to move forward now and worry about tomorrow."
Methot, Jamie Benn, and Radek Faksa scored goals for the Stars, who fell to 41-32-8 on the season and lost for the ninth time in their last 10 road games (1-7-2).

"We turned the puck over at the top of both zones too many times," said Stars coach Ken Hitchcock. "And we made mistakes in what we call critical ice, and they took advantage of it. We had a lot of scoring chances ourselves even the ones that didn't hit the net, but we made mistakes in the wrong areas, either in our zone or the offensive zone and it came back to haunt us."
Jakob Silfverberg tallied one goal and two assists, and Josh Manson and Andrew Cogliano both had one goal and one assist for the Ducks, who improved to 43-25-13 and moved into third place in the Pacific Division -- one point behind second-place San Jose.
"We had lots of energy, we were really skating and had our feet underneath us," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "They're still an opponent that scares you because they have a transition game and a lot of skill on that side that can make you pay the price. They didn't quit. They continued to come back and found a way to make the game very interesting."
The Ducks took a 1-0 lead 2:28 into the game, taking advantage of a Dallas turnover at the Anaheim blue line. The end result was Silfverberg redirecting a Manson pass into the net with Anaheim on a 3-on-2 rush.
The Ducks made it a 2-0 game a little more than four minutes later by cashing in on their first power play of the game. Rickard Rakell took a pass from Ryan Getzlaf, skated in on net and then scored on the rebound of his own shot at the 6:33 mark.
Methot cut the lead to 2-1 at 11:13 of the first, taking a pass from Alexander Radulov and scoring from the slot for his first goal of the season and his first as a Star.

"I haven't scored since the playoffs last year so it felt good to get that," Methot said. "But again it doesn't mean a whole lot right now, but I'll take it."
But the Ducks pushed the lead two goals late in the first. Not long after the second Anaheim power play expired, defenseman Hamphus Lindholm put a shot on net that Silfverberg tipped and then Derek Grant tipped to make it a 3-1 game with 20 seconds left in the period.
The Stars came close to cutting the lead to one early in the second period, but Ducks goalie Ryan Miller came up with a big stop on a shorthanded bid by Mattias Janmark. And a minute later the Ducks had a 4-1 lead. After a Radulov turnover in the Anaheim zone, the Ducks went the other way, and Manson scored on the rebound of a Getzlaf shot on the rush at 4:36 of the second.
The Stars cut the lead to 4-2 when a Greg Pateryn shot deflected into the net off Faksa at 7:49 of the second.
The Stars made a strong push in the third, outshooting Anaheim 14-5 in the third period. Benn scored on a wrist shot from the slot on the rush at the 2:52 mark to make it a 4-3 game. But that was as close as the Stars would get.
The Ducks would score late to push the lead back to two goals. Just moments after McKenna made a point-blank save on Cogliano, the Ducks regrouped in the neutral zone and Cogliano got behind the Dallas defense, took a pass from Ryan Kesler and scored on a breakaway to push the lead to 5-3 at the 14:35 mark.
