Anonymity for a defenseman of Methot's skill set is the sign of a job well done. He goes about his business quietly, largely under-appreciated, except by his peers.
From 2008-12, as a starter with the Columbus Blue Jackets, the 6-foot-3, 228-pound Ottawa native scored seven goals and collected 40 assists.
But all the excelling in the shadows changed on July 1, 2012, when Methot was traded to his hometown Ottawa Senators.
On Canada Day, no less.
Size and steadiness were the attributes that convinced the Blue Jackets to select Methot in the sixth round (No. 168) in the 2003 NHL Draft following the first of a three-year prep with London in the Ontario Hockey League.
Methot's final year of junior in 2004-05 turned out to be particularly memorable. Anchored by his commanding presence on the blue line and future NHL players Corey Perry, Dave Bolland and Brandon Prust up front, London captured the Memorial Cup, blanking Rimouski (and Sidney Crosby) 4-0 in the final.
Except for a 20-game stretch with the Blue Jackets in 2006-07, which included his NHL debut on Feb. 25, 2007, and nine games the following season, Methot spent the majority of his time with Syracuse of the American Hockey League.
In his final year in Columbus in 2011-12, Methot was limited to 46 games because of a broken jaw.
In 2013-14, Methot had six goals and 23 points in 75 games but was limited to 45 games in 2014-15 because of a persistent back injury that caused him to be put on injured reserve at the start of the season.
With unrestricted free agency looming on July 1, 2015, the Senators signed their hometown acquisition to a four-year contract on Feb. 16, 2015.
