McGrew, 19, spent last season with the
Spokane Chiefs
in the
Western Hockey League
(WHL). After missing the 2016-17 season, McGrew scored his first career WHL goal on his first shift in his first career game. He registered 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points during the 2017-18 campaign, ranking second among rookie skaters in goals and seventh in points, while also finishing tied for second in power-play goals (5). In the 2018 WHL playoffs, he recorded two goals and four assists in seven games.
Prior to joining the WHL, McGrew spent time with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings U16 club, leading the league in goals in the 2015-16 season, finishing with a total of 47 points (29g, 18a) in 32 games. In his two seasons with the club, McGrew compiled 58 points (35g, 23a) in 56 contests.
The five-foot-ten, 190-pound native from Orange, CA, was selected by San Jose of the sixth round (159th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft.
