January 6, 2023- Sharks claim Forward Mikey Eyssimont Off Waivers
March 1, 2023- Sharks acquire Center Vladislav Namestnikov From Tampa Bay
Just after the new year, General Manager Mike Grier made a pickup off waivers with forward Mikey Eyssimont from the Winnipeg Jets. Eyssimont added much-needed grit, competitiveness, and depth to the Sharks offensive group. At the time of the pickup, Eyssimont, 26, skated in 19 games in '22-23 with Winnipeg, scoring a goal and adding four assists with a plus-5 rating. He would become a regular in the Sharks lineup with linemates Logan Couture and Alexander Barabanov, scoring three goals and five assists in 20 games played. His style of play captured attention across the league and in a later move by Grier, he was traded on March 1 to the Lightning for forward Vladislav Namestnikov.
January 25, 2023 - Sharks trade F Matt Nieto and D Ryan Merkley to the Colorado Avalanche for F Martin Kaut and D Jacob MacDonald
At the time of the trade, General Manager Mike Grier said of MacDonald, "Jacob is a versatile veteran player who has been an All-Star at the American Hockey League level and will add depth to our NHL line-up."
Grier also had high praises for Kaut saying, "Martin is a former first-round pick who bolsters our group of young developing forwards at the American Hockey League level." Kaut, 23, has split time with the Avalanche and the Colorado Eagles (AHL) this season, recording three points (one goal, two assists) in 27 NHL games and eight points (five goals, three assists) in 10 AHL appearances.
February 5, 2023- Sharks acquire 4th Round Pick for Megna
With the trade deadline under a month away, Grier made his next move by sending D Jaycob Megna to Seattle in exchange for a 2023 fourth-round selection of Seattle's choosing, to be decided by June 15, 2023. This adds another pick for the Sharks in what is considered to be a very deep draft class at the end of June.
February 26, 2023- Sharks Make Blockbuster Trade with New Jersey
As the deadline drew nearer, The San Jose Sharks and General Manager Mike Grier continued to look for ways to bolster the prospect pipeline and navigate the tight salary cap to help the team return to the postseason in the coming years. On February 26, the Sharks sent forward
Timo Meier
(50% retained for '22-'23), defenseman
Scott Harrington
, forward Timur Ibragimov, defenseman Santeri Hatakka, and goaltender Zach Emond to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a 2023 first-round selection, a conditional 2024 first-round selection, defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin, forward Fabian Zetterlund, defenseman Nikita Okhotiuk, and forward Andreas Johnsson.
The loss of home-grown Timo Meier is tough for the Sharks and Sharks fans, no doubt. Grier acknowledged saying, "Timo has been an exceptional player and teammate for the Sharks franchise for the past seven seasons. He was drafted here and has grown into one of the NHL's most imposing power forwards and will be missed by his teammates on the ice and our organization off the ice. These decisions are always extremely difficult but at this time, it is in the best interest of the organization's goal to quickly return to being one of the NHL's top teams. We wish Timo the very best and he will always remain a part of the San Jose Sharks family for life."
However, the Sharks added what could turn into two extra first-round draft picks over the next three seasons and it brought in a group of promising young players Grier is excited to have in the organization. "This trade brings several high-level assets to our organization which can be utilized as we continue to reinvigorate our pool of young, talented and competitive players," said Grier. "Shakir is a big, mobile defenseman who leads the team defenseman in scoring this year and has the tools and upside to be a top-four defenseman in his career. Fabian is a young, developing player who brings offensive upside to the team, averaging half a point per game in the NHL. Nikita is a hard nosed, physical blueliner with good leadership skills and high character. Andreas is a proven NHL player, with over 200 games of NHL experience.
February 28, 2023- Sharks Acquire Prospect Henry Thrun From Ducks
As the trade deadline neared, the Sharks acquired prospect defenseman Henry Thrun from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for San Jose's 3rd Round Selection in the 2023 Draft.
Thrun, currently a senior at Harvard University (ECAC), has posted 26 points (five goals, 21 assists), a plus-16 rating and 14 penalty minutes in 28 games. Thrun was named ECAC Defender of the Month in Nov. 2022, after picking up nine points (three goals, six assists) during the month.
"Henry is a very good two-way defenseman with high character and leadership skills," said Grier. "He was named captain for Harvard this year and has a solid pedigree as a player, earning All-American honors last season after helping guide Harvard to an ECAC Championship."
March 3, 2023 - Sharks Acquire Draft Selections for Bonino in Three-Team Trade
Trade Deadline day was finally here and the Sharks were active in trading a few roster players to other teams, looking to acquire future assets. With that, it was announced that the San Jose Sharks had traded forward
Nick Bonino
in a three-team trade with Montreal and Pittsburgh.
The trade involves three separate transactions:
• San Jose trades Bonino and their 2024 fifth-round draft selection to Montreal in exchange for the rights to Arvid Henriksson.
• San Jose trades defenseman Tony Sund to Pittsburgh in exchange for Pittsburgh's conditional 2024 fifth-round draft selection and Pittsburgh's 2023 seventh-round draft selection. The conditional 2024 fifth-round selection will become a 2024 fourth-round selection if Pittsburgh advances to the 2023 Eastern Conference Final.
• Montreal trades Bonino to Pittsburgh in exchange for Sund and will retain 50% of Bonino's salary.
With the offers given, Grier was happy to once again acquire assets for the future as well as give veteran NHLer Bonino a chance to play in a familiar place. "Nick has been a quality, veteran teammate on and off the ice during his time in San Jose," said Grier. "He deserves the opportunity to play in the Playoffs and we're pleased we can place him in familiar surroundings and acquire assets that can help our organization in the future."
March 3, 2023- Sharks Acquire 2025 Fourth-Round Selection in Exchange for Namestnikov
Just 2 days after acquiring Namestnikov from Tampa Bay, Grier announced that the club had acquired a 2025 fourth-round selection from Winnipeg in exchange for the Forward. For the second time on deadline day, the Sharks had secured another future draft pick and were able to maximize their value on a previous waiver claim earlier in the season.
March 3, 2023- Sharks Acquire Peterson from Dallas Stars in Exchange for Reedy
In what would be the last move by General Manager Mike Grier in his first season at the helm, the Sharks announced they had acquired forward Jacob Peterson from the Dallas Stars in exchange for forward Scott Reedy.
The Lidkoping, Sweden native has played in 66 career NHL contests and registered 17 points (12 goals, five assists). He has skated in 50 career AHL games, totaling 31 points (15 goals, 16 assists). In international competition, Peterson represented Sweden at the 2022 IIHF World Championship and finished the tournament with five points (two goals, three assists) in five games.
