Harrington spent the first three seasons of his NHL career with three different teams and was traded for eventual two-time Stanley Cup winner Phil Kessel.
Selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round (No. 54) of the 2011 NHL Draft, Harrington played two seasons with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League before being called up by the Penguins during the 2014-15 season. He had no points in 10 NHL games.

Harrington was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1, 2015, in a deal that sent Kessel to the Penguins, and had one assist in 15 games with Toronto, then was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets on June 25, 2016.
He had three points in 32 games with Columbus, including his first NHL goal in a 7-6 overtime win against the Ottawa Senators on Jan. 22, 2017. Harrington spent all of the 2017-18 season with Columbus, finishing with six points (three goals, three assists) in 32 games.
