conference-call

NHL players are just like us. At least, in that they do Zoom video chats.
Sharks Captain Logan Couture - alongside fellow Pacific Division leaders Anze Kopitar, Ryan Getzlaf, and Marc-Andre Fleury - joined a Zoom video call today to answer some media questions.
And with no hockey to fall back on, the conference call had some definite segues.

Couture - who made sure to point out that he was the only one on the call without kids - remains in San Jose. "Didn't get a chance to go to Canada; working on a green card."
But staying in San Jose does come with a challenge: his home gym isn't the greatest, considering he usually has access to the Sharks facilities.
"I haven't been able to do much, I've tried to stay in as much as possible, so a lot of body weight stuff. I'm not in the best shape but I'll get it going though."
The moderator then asked the crew how they were passing the time while self-quarantining. Besides reading, Couture is catching up on some shows. He just finished the latest season of Curb Your Enthusiasm (he couldn't pick a favorite episode, though), and is wrapping up the Wire, while also starting Six Feet Under.

Pacific Division players talk NHL Pause

The conversation quickly turned to Couture's book club, a topic of great interest to the reporters submitting questions.
"It's something I've done for years," Couture said. "I've read on our flights - we have some long trips, as the other guys on this call do as well, so the Sharks reached out and asked if I wanted to start it, and I said sure."
But when asked if they would join Couture's book club, Getzlaf and Kopitar both declined.
Couture's reaction: "It hurts."
Another one of the more off-the-wall (but highly appreciated) questions was which teammate the players would most and least like to be stuck in quarantine with.
"The least one's easy," said Couture. "Jumbo. I don't know how he's surviving right now. He's got ADD for sure. If he can't go to the rink, he's lost."
"That's 100% true," Ryan Getzlaf chimed in.
"Yeah, I don't know what he's doing. I texted him a couple times throughout this just to check in on him, see how's he's doing. The guy that I want to be with? I'd say Barclay Goodrow even though he was just traded. I think him and I have the most in common."
Couture also touched on what it's like to be in one of the hotspots of COVID-19 - the first area in the US to have the shelter in place rules.
"We were one of the first ones to shut down," he said. "I've tried to stay inside as much as possible, but when I have gone out it's been to small businesses and restaurants that've been good to me. It's a big message here: to support your local and small businesses and try to help them get through this. We're all in this together.
"I think people here in Santa Clara have bought into what the government's told them. Social distancing and staying six feet away from people when you are you. I see it when I go to the grocery store and stuff like that. They've done a good job here, just trying to stay strong."
Well said.
