The Ottawa Senators suffered their first defeat of the 2021-22 season Saturday night after a 3-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.

Anton Forsberg made 26 saves in the Senators (1-1-0) goal while Josh Norris found the back of the net. Toronto's (2-1-0) Wayne Simmonds, Alex Kerfoot and Michael Bunting scored as Jack Campbell turned away 20 shots.
"Second and third period we played as hard as you have to play to win a game in the National Hockey League," Sens head coach D.J. Smith said. "But you can't feel your way into a game on the road and we did that. At the end of the day, that was the difference."
After falling to a 3-0 deficit after 20 minutes Thursday in Ottawa, the Maple Leafs reversed that with a dominant first period Saturday. It took 2:12 for Simmonds to get his first of the year as he re-directed Rasmus Sandin's pass from the goal line past Forsberg.
"Their fourth line scored on our fourth line and that changes the game," Smith said.
Kerfoot doubled the lead with 11:51 left in the frame on a one-timer out front in the slot after taking William Nylander's feed.
"I thought we had some guys who didn't play hard enough early," Smith said. "They put us in a 2-0 hole on the road and we couldn't find a way out of it."
Ottawa got on the board at 17:42 of the middle frame and it came on the power play as Drake Batherson found Norris with a gorgeous cross-ice feed who made no mistake beating Campbell five-hole for his first on the campaign.
"To get one on the power play is obviously nice," Batherson said. "Looking forward to building that into tomorrow's game and throughout the season."
The Sens thought they had tied the game with five seconds left in the period as the puck went in off Batherson after Campbell had poke checked the puck after stopping the Sens forward's initial shot but after a challenge by Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe, it was determined Batherson was offside.
"Sometimes they go in for you and sometimes they go the other way," Batherson said. "It's just the way it is."
Toronto restored its two-goal lead at 7:57 of the third through Bunting who fired past Forsberg from the low slot after regaining his feet after slipping in the offensive zone on a 2-on-1.
With an assist tonight, Tyler Ennis has points in both games this season for the Senators, who have power play goals in the first two games of the season.
