2019 World Championship Journal: Time for a Tough Test vs. Russia

Team USA has moved on to the quarterfinals and will face its biggest challenge yet

by Brady Skjei | @BradySkjei

Tomorrow is a big day for Team USA: We face Russia, the top seed in the tournament, in the quarterfinals at Worlds.

Getting here wasn't easy. We won five times - once in overtime - and lost twice, in our first and last games of the preliminaries. Our win over Germany this past Sunday clinched our quarterfinals berth, which was obviously a huge thing. That's the goal coming into the tournament, is you want to get into this part of the tournament, to another round. We were really excited.

We're four games into World Championships, and things are going well for Team USA here in Kosice.

We haven't been perfect. Yesterday's win over Great Britain was a little ugly, but we got the job done. After a loss to Slovakia in our first game of the tournament, we've gotten three W's and our offense has really been clicking. Right now, we're in second place in Group A with three games left to play in the preliminaries.

We're about one week into the tournament, Team USA is feeling good.

The travel from NYC to Germany was pretty smooth. A lot of us slept most of the way, trying to beat the jetlag. We had a whole section of the plane to ourselves and I knew most of the guys, so it was nice to see a bunch of familiar faces again.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom

by Brady Skjei @BradySkjei / New York Rangers

I was fortunate enough to grow up with a mom who cared more about me having fun on the ice than worry about how I played.

She was a huge supporter of mine from Day 1, but not in the hopes of me turning hockey into a career or a scholarship to a top college. All that she worried about was that I was having a good time with my friends, playing the game I loved.
