Nine years ago tonight in Anaheim - and into the early morning hours Nashville time - Jerred Smithson became the first playoff overtime hero in Predators history.

The Round One series between the Predators and the Ducks in 2011 was tied 2-2 entering Game 5 back in California, and late in regulation, it looked as though the Ducks would head back to Tennessee with a chance to clinch.

Oh, how quickly things can change.

With just 36 seconds to play in regulation, former Preds Captain Shea Weber tied the game at 3-3, and then, only 1:57 into overtime, Smithson took a feed from Jordin Tootoo and beat Ducks goaltender Ray Emery.

As TSN broadcaster Gord Miller exclaimed following the OT winner, "The Nashville Predators have won a Game 5 for the first time, they've won an overtime game for the first time, and they'll go home ahead three games to two."

More from the Predators franchise timeline:

"'It's an amazing feeling to be one step closer,' said Tootoo, whose second assist set up Smithson's one-timer. 'The playoffs are all about momentum swings, and we've done well with that throughout the year.'

"Nashville had to fight just to force overtime. Anaheim took a one-goal lead at 14:16 of the third period, and it wasn't until an extra-attacker goal by Weber with 36 seconds left in regulation - set up by an offensive zone face-off win by Mike Fisher and a tape-to-tape pass by Cody Franson - sent the game to a fourth period.

"Kevin Klein and Joel Ward scored Nashville's first two goals, while Pekka Rinne turned away 23 shots."
