The Predators handed the first-place Boston Bruins a 2-1 loss March 28 at TD Garden, snapping Boston's win streak at seven. It was just the fourth time during their historic season that the Bruins had lost in regulation at home.

It was arguably one of the biggest upsets of the 2022-23 NHL season, but it was significant in more ways than one. It was a bittersweet victory for the Predators, who were still reeling from the news of the tragic shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville just over 24 hours earlier.

Both the Predators and the Bruins wore Covenant School logo decals on their helmets, and TD Garden held a moment of silence before the game, displaying the names of the victims on the jumbotron to honor the lives lost.

"It wasn't [just another game]," defenseman Ryan McDonagh said after the win. "And quite frankly, there really are no words that you can say about what went on yesterday in Nashville and it's just a tragedy for those families and everybody affected. You don't really realize it until you have kids of your own… [When] it happens close to home, it's definitely different."

McDonagh, whose daughter attends another school near where the shooting occurred, opted to stay home with his family the night before the game and fly out to meet his team in Boston the following morning. While at the airport waiting to board his flight, McDonagh met 17-year-old Brentwood native Caleb Miele, a Predators fan who was celebrating his birthday with a trip to Boston to watch his favorite team take on the Bruins. A Preds win would have been gift enough, but McDonagh and the team made Miele's birthday extra special by inviting him to read the starting lineup in the visitor's locker room before the game.

"Like any parent, you do anything you can to help your family and your kids out," McDonagh said. "Then at the end of the day, there's a second family for us in our profession, and it's our hockey family and our team. We felt like we needed to go out and try to do our job the best we could and sacrifice and leave it all out there and just try to maybe bring a little bit of inspiration to the city of Nashville."
