EDMONTON, AB - The Oilers announced the signing of free agent defenceman Jakub Jerabek on Monday.
The Czech, who spent parts of the 2017-18 season between the American Hockey League's Laval Rocket, Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals, spoke to 630 CHED Oilers Now guest host Brenden Ullrich on Wednesday. He commented on how the contract offer came to fruition, among other topics.
Jerabek and Andrej Sekera share the same agent. When Sekera's injury was announced, Jerabek said his representative got into contact with the club.
"He (agent) called me and said he spoke with General Manager (Peter Chiarelli)," said the 27-year-old. "Then he called me saying that Edmonton had an offer. I was very happy and excited."
Jerabek got acquainted with competing in a hockey-crazed market after suiting up in 25 games with the Habs. The idea of playing in Edmonton - known as a passionate hockey city with Connor McDavid leading the way - enticed the rearguard.
"It's a hockey town and a big organization with big history," he said. "I'm very excited to play here with this group and with one of the best players in the league, Connor McDavid."
Jerabek mustered two goals and six assists in 36 NHL games last season. In the AHL with the Rocket, the left-shot recorded one goal and 11 points in 17 outings.
"I play solid defence, can make good breakout passes and have a quick transition," Jerabek said of his style of play.
"I know that I have to show up and if I get a chance, hopefully, take it."
