'Yotes Notes: Tippett Displeased By Lack of Effort

Head Coach Dave Tippett didn't mince words when speaking to reporters after his team's humbling 5-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night at the Honda Center.

"To be successful in this League you have to compete at a certain level and if you don't compete at a certain level you've got no chance to win," Tippett said. "That was our group tonight. We just didn't have enough people compete. Whether it's (being) tired or just not into it tonight, we weren't good enough tonight. It's as simple as that."
With the loss, the Coyotes dropped to 4-7-0 this season and to 1-6-0 on the road.
"You learn a lot about your team in games like this," Tippett said. "Who can compete at this level on a nightly basis, in a hard back-to-back or three (games) out of four (nights). It's a hard go here but you learn a lot about your players. A lot of that will be noted tonight."

• Trailing 4-0, Jamie McGinn scored Arizona's lone goal at 16:32 of the second period.
Like Tippett, McGinn was embarrassed by the team's play, especially in the first period when the Ducks out-shot the Coyotes 21-4.
"It was a terrible start to the game," said McGinn, who played 21 games for Anaheim at the end of last season. "Four shots in the first period and two were from the red line. It's unacceptable. It's twice we weren't prepared to play, back-to-back games, and it comes from the leadership. I didn't have a good start in the first period either and I need to go out there and play better to get everyone going. When we got it going in the second period it was too late."
McGinn said captain Shane Doan addressed the team in the first intermission.
"It's never good when Doan has to step up and address the group," McGinn said. "Everyone was quiet and listened when he talked. It was a good job by him for stepping up. We can't throw up a dud in the first period and have him get upset and try to get us going. I feel bad for Louis (Domingue). We hung him out to dry. He's kept us in the last few games and then we lay an egg for him. We have to enjoy the day off tomorrow then get back to work."
• Forward Tobias Rieder returned to the lineup after missing one game because of a lower-body injury.
Rieder logged 15:26 of ice time, but his production on the scoresheet was minimal: one takeaway and one blocked shot.
Rieder missed Thursday's game vs. Nashville, ending his consecutive games played streak at 163 games.
• Max Domi fought Anaheim's Ryan Kesler late in the first period and dropped Kesler to the ice with one uppercut to the chin. Kelser had to be helped off the ice, but he returned later in the game.

• Louis Domingue allowed three goals on 21 shots in the first period and did not play after the first intermission.
"We were down 3-0, we give him a rest," Tippett said. "He played hard last night. It wasn't his night tonight."
Justin Peters played the final 40 minutes in relief and stopped 10 of 12 shots faced.
• Citing goaltender interference, the Coyotes challenged Anaheim's fifth goal, scored by Rickard Rakell at 14:11 of the third period.
Per the NHL: "After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Referee confirmed no goaltender interference infractions occurred before the puck crossed the goal line."
