Golden Knights, powered by Wong, win NHL debut

VANCOUVER --Rookie Tyler Wong scored a hat trick to lift the Vegas Golden Knights to a 9-4 win against the Vancouver Canucks in their NHL debut at Rogers Place on Sunday.
Wong, who scored the first goal in Golden Knights history 4:58 into the first period, also had an assist in the expansion team's preseason opener.

Wong, 21, skated in alone on the power play after a nice chip pass from Cody Glass, who was selected with the No. 6 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, and beat goalie Richard Bachman with a quick fake and a backhand high over the glove to put Vegas ahead 1-0.
Wong, who signed in May with the Chicago Wolves, Vegas' American Hockey League affiliate, as an undrafted free agent after he had 109 points (51 goals, 58 assists) in 69 games for Lethbridge of the Western Hockey League last season, scored his second goal on a rebound at the side of the net with 2:30 left in the first period to make it 4-2. The 5-foot-9 forward completed his hat trick 6:56 into the third period when he scored for a 6-3 lead.

Tomas Hyka scored twice, and Tomas Nosek, Alex Tuch, Nick Suzuki and Paul Thompson each had a goal in the Vegas debut. Rookie Dylan Ferguson, 18, made 29 saves for the Golden Knights, who dressed nine players with NHL experience but left most of their expected inaugural roster at home.
Brock Boeser scored twice, and Jordan Subban and Philip Holm each had a goal for the Canucks, who were playing their second preseason game in as many days. Vancouver was missing most of its veterans after they left earlier in the day for two preseason games against the Los Angeles Kings at the 2017 NHL China Games presented by O.R.G. Packaging.
