Golden Knights by the numbers

LAS VEGAS -- The team the Vegas Golden Knights selected Wednesday in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft presented by T-Mobile has some immediate credibility in both the high-profile nature of some of the players and the underlying numbers related to the 30-man roster.
The Golden Knights chose one player from each of the other 30 NHL teams and wound up similar to them in experience, height, weight and age.
Here is a look, by the numbers, at the team announced at T-Mobile Arena, the home of the Golden Knights, who play their first NHL game Oct. 6 at the Dallas Stars.

This analysis does not include players signed before the Expansion Draft or players added Wednesday in other transactions.

Position breakdown: 14 forwards, 13 defensemen, 3 goalies

The Golden Knights were required to select nine defensemen but picked 13. They may use some of that excess in trades to bolster other areas, but it is a safe bet to say that defensive strength will be a calling card from the start.

Number of NHL seasons on roster (minimum 1 game played constitutes a season): 161

The Golden Knights have four players with at least 10 seasons of NHL experience: goalie Marc-Andre Fleury (13), forward Chris Thorburn (12), defenseman Marc Methot (11) and forward David Perron (10).

Career NHL regular-season games played: 8,420

Thorburn has played the most NHL games of any Golden Knights player (750). Forward Brandon Leipsic, formerly of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has played the fewest (six).

2016-17 NHL regular-season games played: 1,550

Three Golden Knights played all 82 games this season: defenseman Luca Sbisa for the Vancouver Canucks; forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare for the Philadelphia Flyers; and Perron for the St. Louis Blues.

Career NHL regular-season goals: 854

The roster has two players who have scored more than 100 goals, and goals could become a much-needed commodity. James Neal, formerly of the Nashville Predators, leads with 238; Perron has 159.

Career NHL regular-season assists: 1,436

The Golden Knights have three players with more than 100 NHL assists: Perron (219), Neal (213), and defenseman Jason Garrison, formerly of the Tampa Bay Lightning (110).

Career NHL regular-season goaltending wins: 409

Fleury, formerly of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has 375 wins; Calvin Pickard, formerly of the Colorado Avalanche, has 28; and J-F Berube, formerly of the New York Islanders, has six.

Stanley Cup championships: 4

Fleury has three, including this season. He also won in 2009 and 2016. Defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk, formerly of the Chicago Blackhawks, won in 2015.

First-round picks: 4

Fleury was drafted No. 1 by Pittsburgh 14 years ago. Perron was selected No. 26 by St. Louis in the 2007 NHL Draft. Sbisa was selected No. 19 by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2008. Defenseman Griffin Reinhart was drafted No. 4 by the New York Islanders in 2012.

Average age: 27.7 years old

Defenseman Deryk Engelland, formerly of the Calgary Flames, is the oldest player at 35 years, two months. He played for the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL and lives in the city during the offseason. Forward William Carrier, formerly of the Buffalo Sabres, is the youngest at 22 years, six months.

Average height: 6-foot-1

Three players are tied for tallest at 6-foot-4: Reinhart; defenseman Clayton Stoner, formerly of the Anaheim Ducks; and defenseman Brayden McNabb, formerly of the Los Angeles Kings. Forward Jonathan Marchessault, formerly of the Florida Panthers, is the shortest at 5-foot-9.

Average weight: 201 pounds

Thorburn is the heaviest player at 235. Marchessault is the lightest at 174.

Countries represented: 8

There are 18 players from Canada, four from the United States, two from Finland, two from Sweden and one each from Czech Republic, France, Italy and Russia.
