The Los Angeles Kings selected Berube in the fourth round (No. 95) in the 2009 NHL Draft after his first season with Montreal of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and signed him to a three-year, entry-level contract. After spending most of two seasons with Ontario of the ECHL, Berube spent all of the next two seasons with Manchester of the American Hockey League.

He was 28-17-2 with a 2.37 goals-against average and .913 save percentage in 2013-14, then went 37-9-4 with a 2.18 GAA and .913 save percentage the following season before leading the Monarchs to the Calder Cup, going 13-3 with a 2.30 GAA in the playoffs.

The Kings tried to get Berube through waivers at the start of the 2015-16 season to return him to Manchester. But the New York Islanders had injuries in goal and claimed him on Oct. 6, 2015. He went 3-2-1 in seven appearances for the Islanders, earning his first NHL win against the Minnesota Wild on Feb. 2, 2016.

New York kept Berube as part of a three-goalie unit in 2016-17. He made 14 appearances and went 3-2-2 with a 3.42 GAA and .889 save percentage. The Vegas Golden Knights claimed Berube, an impending Group VI free agent, in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, but he signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 1, 2017.

Berube started 2017-18 with Rockford of the AHL but he spent enough time with the Blackhawks after starter Corey Crawford was injured to make 10 starts, going 3-6-1 with a 3.78 GAA.
