The St. Louis Blues selected Carrier, a rugged forward, in the second round (No. 57) of the 2013 NHL Draft after he had averaged more than a point per game in his two previous seasons with Cape Breton of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
But before Carrier had a chance to make the Blues, he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 28, 2014, as part of the package that brought goalie Ryan Miller to St. Louis.

Carrier spent all of the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons with Rochester, Buffalo's American Hockey League affiliate. He began the 2016-17 season in Rochester but was called up after eight games and made his NHL debut against the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 5, 2016. He scored his first NHL goal two weeks later against the Pittsburgh Penguins and finished the season with eight points (five goals, three assists) in 41 games.
The Sabres left Carrier exposed in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, and he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights. He had three points (one goal, two assists) in 37 regular-season games and was scoreless in 10 games during the Golden Knights' run to the Stanley Cup Final. He missed most of the last two rounds with an undisclosed injury.
Carrier established himself as a reliable bottom-six forward during the next two seasons, scoring an NHL career-high eight goals in 2018-19 and finishing with seven goals and 19 points in 2019-20.
