Super 16: Capitals stay on top, new No. 2

The Washington Capitals are No. 1 in the NHL.com Super 16 power rankings for a second consecutive week. Like last week, they fell one point short of being a unanimous No. 1 among the panel of 13 staff members who vote.

The Minnesota Wild, who were ranked in top three by 12 of the voters -- and No. 1 by Tim Campbell -- moved up two spots to No. 2, ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are No. 3.
The Columbus Blue Jackets, who are 5-6-0 following a 16-game winning streak, dropped two spots to No. 4.

The San Jose Sharks (No. 7) and Anaheim Ducks (No. 9) swapped spots from last week. The Nashville Predators, who are on a 6-1-1 run, moved into the Super 16 for the first time since Dec. 22, when they were No. 15.
What is interesting this week is how many teams were ranked by the 13 writers. In addition to the Super 16, five teams -- including the New York Islanders -- received at least one point.
The rankings are calculated based on the votes of 13 staff members. Point values are assigned from 16 for a No. 1 ranking down to one for a No. 16 ranking.

1. Washington Capitals (32-10-6)

Total points: 207
Last week: No. 1
Hit: The Capitals have scored at least four goals in 11 of their past 14 games, including nine with at least five goals.
Miss: The three times they didn't score at least four goals all were against the Ottawa Senators, who defeated the Capitals on Tuesday, 3-0. Washington defeated Ottawa 2-1 on Jan. 1 and 1-0 on Jan. 7.

2. Minnesota Wild (31-11-5)

Total points: 186
Last week: No. 4
Hit: They have 67 points in 47 games. Prior to this season, the earliest the Wild reached 67 points was in their 57th game (2002-03).
Miss: Eric Staal has one point, a goal, in his past six games. Zach Parise and Charlie Coyle haven't scored in nine straight games.

3. Pittsburgh Penguins (30-12-5)

Total points: 185
Last week: No. 3
Hit: Conor Sheary has eight goals in nine games this month.
Miss: Defenseman Kris Letang has missed five games with a lower-body injury. He has missed 17 games with three injuries this season.

4. Columbus Blue Jackets (32-11-4)

Total points: 160
Last week: No. 2
Hit: The Blue Jackets are second to the Capitals in first-period goal differential at plus-24 (51-27). The Capitals are plus-27 (48-21).
Miss: Columbus is 5-6-0 since its 16-game winning streak and has allowed 36 goals in those 11 games. It allowed 27 goals during the winning streak.

5. Chicago Blackhawks (30-15-5)

Total points: 146
Last week: No. 5
Hit: Jonathan Toews has six points in the past two games and 16 points in the past 20 since returning from an injury.
Miss: Artem Anisimov has two points in the past nine games, including eight games with zero.

6. Montreal Canadiens (29-13-7)

Total points: 142
Last week: No. 6
Hit: The Canadiens have allowed a total of five goals in the past three games, including four in regulation, after giving up 24 goals in their previous six games.
Miss: Forward Alex Galchenyuk reinjured his right knee, which kept him out for 18 games from Dec. 6-Jan. 12. He didn't play Tuesday and isn't expected to play against the New York Islanders on Thursday.

7. San Jose Sharks (31-16-2)

Total points: 141
Last week: No. 9
Hit: Patrick Marleau has five goals in the past two games, including four in the third period against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday. He needs two to become the 45th player in to score 500 in the NHL.
Miss: Joe Thornton has not scored on a goalie this season; he has three empty-net goals, not as much a miss as it is an anomaly.

8. New York Rangers (31-17-1)

Total points: 117
Last week: No. 8
Hit: Derek Stepan and Mats Zuccarello have created chemistry that has allowed them to be the Rangers two best two-way forwards this season.
Miss: Losing forward Kevin Hayes for 2-3 weeks with a lower-body injury is a blow to the Rangers because of how impactful he has been, particularly centering a line with J.T. Miller and Michael Grabner.

9. Anaheim Ducks (27-15-9)

Total points: 115
Last week: No. 7
Hit: Depth down the middle has allowed Rickard Rakell to play left wing, where he is flourishing on a line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.
Miss: Forward Jakob Silfverberg is dealing with a head injury, according to the Orange County Register, and has missed three games. He has been skating without contact.

10. Edmonton Oilers (27-15-8)

Total points: 81
Last week: No. 10
Hit: Jordan Eberle is starting to score some goals, a positive sign for him and the Oilers after he went 18 consecutive games without one.
Miss: They are two games into a 16-game stretch that includes 12 road games. Starting March 4 they begin an eight-game homestand and play 13 home games in their last 18 games.

11. Ottawa Senators (26-15-5)

Total points: 76
Last week: No. 13
Hit: The Senators are 9-4-2 against the Metropolitan Division. Two of those losses came against the Capitals by a combined two goals.
Miss: It might be nitpicking, but the Senators are struggling with their power play at home: 13-for-81 (16.0 percent) there, 13-for-65 (20 percent) on the road.

12. Nashville Predators (23-17-8)

Total points: 61
Last week: NR
Hit: The Predators are 5-1-1 in one-goal games since Jan. 10. They were 3-3-7 in one-goal games previously.
Miss: They are 2-for-30 on the power play in their past 10 games.

13. St. Louis Blues (24-19-5)

Total points: 54
Last week: No. 11
Hit: Carter Hutton made 34 saves in a 3-0 win against the Penguins on Tuesday.
Miss: Goalie Jake Allen has been scratched for the past two games and it's unclear when he's going to get back in the lineup; Hutton is going to play against the Wild on Thursday.

14. Toronto Maple Leafs (23-14-9)

Total points: 51
Last week: No. 12
Hit: Nazem Kadri has 20 goals in 46 games, a 35-goal pace. He has matched his NHL career high (20 in 78 games in 2013-14).
Miss: Defenseman Morgan Rielly has missed four games with an ankle injury but could return Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers. If not, he could be back immediately after the All-Star break.

15. Boston Bruins (24-21-6)

Total points: 23
Last week: No. 14
Hit: David Pastrnak ended a 17-game goal drought with the overtime winner against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. The Bruins were 3-6-2 in their previous 11 games and had lost four in a row (0-3-1).
Miss: David Backes has an assist in the past eight games. He is minus-7 in the past seven.

16. Los Angeles Kings (23-21-4)

Total points: 10
Last week: No. 16
Hit: Anze Kopitar has 10 points in his past 10 games. Two of those were a goal, which is important because he has five in 42 games.
Miss: Kopitar isn't shooting the puck enough. He has 84 shots, an average of two per game. He has 10 shots on goal in his past nine games.
